How would you like to define gigging? I perform with one group that rehearses weekly, performs quarterly and I don't get paid. (Of course, it is a chorus so I don't use a guitar either). I am the on call bassist for another choir and I play 4-6 time a year, for no pay. I suspect if the definition of gigging includes me the answers will be less than interesting.

So how about "gigging" means playing for a (non-friends and family) audience on a regular basis, say one a month or more and you either get paid or someone asked you to be there. (Thus I am excluding regulars at open mics, for not particular reason, but...)

Or do you want to raise things up a notch and hear from folks whose primary source of income is derived from "guitar activities"?

*I had to add more characters to make this fly on the new LTG, so I added this sentence. ;)

It's all part of an evil plan to make people work for the post count now that there are forum titles that are based on that count.

I do the same as frono, so I guess I'm not "gigging". If I ever got paid to play, I would most certainly frame that money!!

You can get paid for playing music? ;)

Joe

Some people claim it is possible. Others "pay to play" of the open mic charge discussion means anything.

To the original question, I would describe mgod as a full time profession musician. Search for "Creed Bratton" for some of mgod's posts on mgod's recent work. twocorgis, The Guilds of Grot, and bassmyf are three bassists who I know play out regularly and have referred to their bands and sometimes link to their work. One has a day job, one is looking for one and I don't know about the third. There might be a couple more bassists and I know there are guitarists - does AcornHouse who teaches and performs with his students count? - who are making money playing but they may speak for themselves.

I'd call myself a "gigging musician", but then that would imply that I actually make money doing it. I always used to say that I play for free, but get paid to move my equipment. Now I don't even get paid for that!

That being said, all of my band's "gigs" so far have been for one charity or another, so it's all for a good cause. I look at it that if I were playing music for the money, I'd have starved to death a long time ago.

But since already from 100 posts until an infinite number you stay as "Senior Member" is not a real motivation....(Looks like below 10 posts one is a "Junior Member" and between 10 and 99 you are a "Member".)
Somebody with >10,000 should be a "Super Member" or so ! :)

Yes, but on drums. Does that count? It pays about the same today as it did in 1976, and that's the exact same, not adjusted for inflation. I suppose I got paid well in 1976 and thereabouts, but not so good recently. It seems as though if anyone gets paid anything- they are making a killing compared to most of them out there.

I gig out for "decent " money anywhere from 6-10 times a month, but it is not how I make my living. I`m just happy to be able to play what I like, and pretty much cover my instrument/amp/strings with a little pocket change left over..

yep, giging and recording here since 1982. unfortunately not as much as I want to, but I don't have to live from it either. therefore I can choose where to play and if I get paid. usually cover jobs have to be paid, originals not necessarily depending on the bunch of musos or the location.

I like to think of myself as a gigging musician. Our band plays out two to three times a month and once my unemployment runs out I will then be a "Professional Musician", as that will be my only source of income!

Hey Grot, welcome to the club!

Yeah, I'm playing gigs about twice a week, some are paid and most are volunteer...

So from a different thread, if I play out and someone else courtesy pays the $5 cover charge for me (in Detroit) does that mean that it was a gig? Yes I'm being facitiuos.
