As a young boy in the early seventies I remember the series of fights he had with Muhammed Ali, and thinking these guys are monsters!! Here's a link to the article. Very sad. Best of luck "Smokin Joe" http://sports.yahoo.com/box/blog/bo..._dimension=carousel_coke_today&ysp_frm_woah=1

Ah yes, those were the days.
All the best to Smokin' Joe.

Today, IMHO, boxing has no personality, at least compared to the days of Ali-Frazier, Leonard-Duran, etc.
I have no idea who's who anymore, but that could be my fault.
I could go on.....

I will go on because you are spot on my friend; "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, Thomas "The Hit Man" Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto "The Bull" Duran, yes Joe, those were the days. :D

To me Frazier, Ali, Foreman, and Leonard reached their peak by winning Olympic Gold Medals.

I always loved watching those guys box and it makes me very sad to hear Smokin' Joe has been stricken with this terrible disease.

Kinda sad that we're seeing the last of the great heavyweights. At least Pacquiao is kinda keeping the sport alive

Hopefully, Joe will beat the odds as he did so many times in the ring.

Too many sanctioning bodies nowadays. Lots of decent fighters come up through the ranks with 50-60 fights, only to get a shot at a meaningless title with a mediocre paycheck. At that point, they usually don't have the time or the skills left to get through the top contenders. This results in a lot of disappointing fights in the upper weights, and champions that wouldn't have been contenders in the old days. :(
