Were there different finishes on the D15's made during the 80's. I have one from 1983 that has a very dark finish but I seem to see a lot of them with very light finishes. Is that what people refer to as a cherry finish?

Cherry would be distinctly reddish. There was also a brown finish. If your label follows the usual rules it may have a "CH" or "BR" attached to the model number.

I'm a little confused here so help me out. :?
Are you sure we're talking D15s and not D25s? The only 15s I know are all mahogany and consistently looked something like this one.

And this:

And I have to change my sig. line because both of my D15's were made in 1987. The one in the pic was made in March and the inside label reads, "D15M". It has a glossy finish.

The one I got from Joe (in his pic) is satin finish (?) as he apparently thought it too glossy and sanded it. It DOES look very cool though. It was made in October of '87. The inside label reads, "DM15A12". Why? I have no idea. What does it mean? I have no idea. Basically the same guitar so there's no apparent reason it shouldn't be labelled D15M. There is, however, a difference in the bridge.

The bridge in Joe's pic appears to be single-pinned in the middle of the bridge; perhaps as a precaution or part of an earlier repair. Now, I haven't actually looked into it so I don't know for certain that it is pinned. It could be an aesthetic thing but I doubt it. I see no other reason for the difference. In the pic of my D15M you will notice that the bridge is definitely not pinned. Here's a link to a larger picture.

My D15M was purchased by my father (new). Except for a recent nutt & compensated saddle it is all original. You will notice too that the label positioning is different in each guitar; one vertical (mine) and one horizontal (Joe's now mine lol). I'm curious since both guitars were manufactured in '87 as to why the label positioning is different.

Peace

Slight veer here:

Hi Doc. Good to "see" you this morning.
FYI, the single 'pin' on the bridge is actually an inlay that I used to cover the head of the screw that connects the bridge to the Bridge Doctor.

I installed it to cure the bellying problem with your guitar.

Take care of yourself,

I'm no expert on the D15s, but I just love the brown finishes Guild was using at the time. The tobacco burst finish shown in my Avatar, was used across the Guild product line including the solid body electrics. I like it because it does not have the red, orange and yellow colors that you see so much of.

Interestingly, the clear finish on my D40 is MUCH more durable than the finishes on my other guitars. I'm a coatings guy, so I find things like that fascinating. :)

F'bird,
Since you brought it up, one of the best looking guitars I've ever seen was a D-25 with an outstanding tobacco burst finish. I had it right down to the wire and lost it in the waning seconds of the bidding. Outbid by 10 bucks, if I recall! :(

I trust that it found a good home and it did, from what I heard.
And I lived through it to see another day (Guild or three)!

Cheers,
Joe

Mine has a much darker red finish. If I knew how to post a photo I could insert one.

Hello trainman,

The earlier versions of the D-15 were available in a 'Mahogany' or a 'Cherry' finish.
The 'mahogany' version was much darker than the later ones.
This is about the darkest one that I've seen:

Is your finish even darker than the example in the photo? Or is a different finish color altogether?

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

The finish is about the same maybe mine is a little darker. What started this was a post on a search site from a guy looking for the cherry finish and I did not know what that meant.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I was corresponding with someone who had posted on craigslist wanting a cherry finish D15. I sent him some photos and we've exchanged a couple of e-mails.

Based on the information that everyone here has provided mine is the mahogany finish. Even so, this guy has offered me $600 based on condition and wants to know if I would accept that. If so he would make arrangements to meet me somewhere in Southern NJ. I would plan to meet at one of my customers locations so that if it is a scam I'll be protected.

I'm not sure if I want to sell, the guitar was a Christmas present from my wife when we had very little money, not that I have much now, about twenty years ago.

Any thoughts?

I would say that's a reasonable price for a typical D-15/D-25. Reading into your story, yours isn't typical. It's priceless. Unless you are deparate for the $$$, I'd keep it. Just my $0.02. Dave

Actually my wife is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Anyway, she does not want me to sell it and I sent the guy an e-mail today that I decided to keep it.

Thanks for everyone's response.

BTW: My screename is from my other hobby model railroading. I have a permanent Lionel layout and do demo's at local train shows on remote control of O gauge engines.
