Mark,

1&3/4" is the largest nut width you will get on any Guild and it is currently only on the F30STD. I have played both the TRAD and STD lines and there are differences in the neck. The STD is a low profile neck very similar to a taylor neck, but a little thicker than the GADs. The TRAD has a thick beefy neck to accompany the 1&11/16" nut. Both, in my opinion, are easy to play fingerstyle. Currently, if I had my choice, I would prefer the thick neck with 1&3/4" nut width just like the Martin modified V. The only problem is I would have to buy a Martin.

To add to the Guild fingerstyle craze, lets not forget John Hurt who was able to play some pretty complex stuff on an old F30 which probably had a 1&11/16" nut.

Probably not, wouldnt he have played a late Hoboken or Early Westerly model with a 1 5/8 nut ? Can I please start a bring back 1 5/8 nut size campaign: I just love this nut width.

Cheers, Ian

I know this may seem as blasphemy to this forum.....

There are many guitars that meet OP Mark's requirements - few, unfortunately, from the maker about whom we chose to focus the discussions on this forum. So, the suggestion is not blasphemy... it's just off topic.

Joe, that modified 112 looks good! I've thought about that myself with my '67. But, just last October I needed a 12 string for a wedding gig and reached for the trusty old girl.

Ian, you are right. MJH most likely did have an F30 with a 1&5/8 nut. I always forget that they were that size back then. If you look at MJH's hands in photos, he had some pretty large fingers and could still play with such a small nut.

:?: :?:

Guild is not currently offering custom orders. At LMG 2010 they said that they would continue the producing GSR (Guild Special Run) models which are basically the size, physical and mechanical specifications of current production models executed in different woods with different trim and "bling". They hope to be able to accept custom orders "in the future" but they are not ready yet. They did note that custom orders would have to be "variations on a theme" that did not require any re-tooling of the machinery to produce.

Hi Mark!
If I may, let me suggest you take a look at this thread (and the attached C/L ad for a guitar that might very well fit your needs):http://letstalkguild.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=23184

I was seriously interested myself, but gave up because of the 1.3/4 nut width.... :D
Our own Evenkeel has very kindly volunteered to help facilitate the transaction, with any interested party.
Great minds Bluespicky!! I was thinking the same thing. :!:

I didn't see this until today, and unfortunately the C/L poster has deleted it. :(

Actually, I haven't found any standard model from any of the big-name makers that matches my ideal in every respect, but I'm sure I'll find something that will get the job done. I could, of course, get the exact specs I want by ordering a custom Martin or Taylor  but the cost would be rather high. For the moment I'm leaning toward either a Martin 000-28EC or a Martin OM-21 Special; however, my favorite local shop is an authorized dealer for Martin, Taylor, Gibson, and Guild - so I should be able to do some effective comparisons. I never know what I'll ultimately walk out with until I find a particular guitar that grabs me.

Thanks much for all the input, everyone.

Mark

...and seller getting more motivated by the minute (just sent me another e-mail trying to tempt with with a free practice amp.) I explained the nut size was the issue for me.

Thanks for the offer - I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I have a couple more month to wait before making a purchase, so I don't think this one will work out for me.

Another strange thing is that I find the D55 is much easier to play standing up, which I rarely do, as opposed to sitting down...must be my arm position?

I'm guessing that you're short-waisted. My lady-friend tells me that I'm long-waisted so I can play my D-55 just fine while seated.....
