For past 9 months of so, I have been watching for a good deal on a Guild D40-- the new Standard, D40 Traditional, or a D40e. Finally, saw a used 2022 Traditional listed at Guitar Center at what I considered a really good price (and I had 45 days to try it out).
I got it about a month ago. It’s perfect. Looks new. I had two issues with it, first GC sent it without a case. Ticked me off because ad clearly said a case is included. I called GC and they stepped up and sent me a case. I figured it would be generic, but they found the original case with the inspection card, etc. Kudos to Guitar Center.
The second issue – though not really serious -- is that the previous owner had the action set really low, like 3/64 inches at 12 fret, low E. What was astounding is that it doesn’t buzz at the level and sounds/plays really good. In any event, I fit a new saddle to get to about 5.5/64th. But it’s nice to know I could go lower as my hands age.
I guess another issue is that I really wanted a sunburst, but the price was too good for the natural top. The natural sitka looks better than most photos I’ve seen.
I bought my first Guild – a D25 or D35 – in the late 1970s. Later traded it for a Martin D28. In late 1990s, I bought a Guild B30 bass (see avatar). But sold that too as I moved on to mandolins and bouzoukis.
So here I am. I’ve been playing the D40 T everyday for 2 hours or so. Really love it. The neck is a perfect carve/feel.
Appreciate all the comments on this site from people posting the merits of Oxnard D40s. You were right and glad I listened to you.
