Just out of curiosity........who were the Sox playing last Thursday  :?: Nevermid, I know the answer to that one. Actually, I like the Red Sox.....except when they play the Rangers. And I love 'em when they play the Yankees!

Thursday was an open house, Jim. No game. Friday was a game. And....... Ouch.

Yeah, like griehund said, there's a tough road ahead! But that doesn't stop us from loving good ole' Fenway!

Hate the Yankees all you want gents, but nobody can even come close to their tradition of greatness. Twenty seven World Series championships and counting!

What's going on with the Sox Charlie? Pitching woes? I'd sure like to see them give the Yanks a run.

For the organization dynamics students out there, this year's Sox are the perfect example of multiple conflicting missions. The ownership wants to regain control of the team as if they had any in the beginning. The general manager wanted a players' manager and got Bobby V. Bobby V wants to be the boss but has no clue how to do it with a twitter driven media. He's in way over his head. And the team wants to plug the chicken & beer leak. Every faction has a different mission and their all failing. Somewhere along the line winning games got lost in the equation. Not sure of the spelling, but I think it's called a cluster fork. :D :( :D :( :D :(

It's why we hate 'em Sandy. But in that market....well with unlimited funds you can do almost anything. The amazing teams are the ones without the deep pockets that still show.....no offense, but have you ever looked at the team payrolls over the years  ?

After looking at that, teams like Tampa Bay amaze me.

Greihund......enlighten me on the Sox business model there? Why does the ownership not run the team? I'm confused? Chicken and beer leak?

Everyone here is confused too. IMHO the management business model is based on squeezing as much money as possible from their several sports endeavors, baseball, European soccer, and car racing. Theo Epstein left the team saddled with a half dozen high priced long term contracts for players that are either injured or simply not producing.
If controlling an organization involves hiring and firing, then the Sox are either unwilling or unable to hire and are unable to fire. Every day we hear that the principal owner was unaware of some major occurrence.
I'm going to stick to my description of the business model as a cloister fort.

I agree that it's ridiculous, but it appears to be what the market will bear. I've been a lifelong Yankees fan, but I've never really recovered from the strike in '94, I've never been as much of a fan since. My takeaway from that was that if the owners can afford to pay the players obscene amounts, that they're making way more money or they wouldn't be doing it. The fans are the ones that pay for it in the end anyway.

The cost of going to games has become so expensive just about everywhere in the country that the average person can't (or shouldn't) afford it. It doesn't make the cut with me when it comes to discretionary spending. To me at least, it's just not worth it, and hey, it cuts into the GAS fund anyway! I do occasionally get freebies from suppliers, and those rare times are about the only time I go these days.

And I'm afraid we're seeing that with the Rangers and their success Sandy. As the salaries get higher and higher, so does the cost to the fans. We'd hope that through merchandise sales and TV contracts they can hold the ticket prices down, but success in the win column leads to higher ticket prices more times than not.

A couple of years ago, I was just checking into the Arlington Sheraton the night of ALCS game 1 for the guitar show and was blown away that I could get the seats that I took the picture posted earlier vs. Yankees for $80/ticket. Last year, the division series games against Tampa Bay that we went to cost more than that, and I'd venture a guess that if the Rangers make an ALCS this year, a game in Arlington will cost around $150/ticket. I can remember going to the Ballpark and sitting in Home Run Porch for $8. But if you looked at the salaries by team I posted, you'll notice that the Rangers team salary has increased dramatically the past couple of years, in fact, they've much more than doubled...........$8 seats are a thing of the past I'm afraid. :(

So true, Jim.

:) You know, I was just looking at all of the plain ol' people in the picture that I'd posted of the game at the ballpark. What if they just didn't show up?

I adore the game of baseball. Always have, always will. But, for me the issue is simple... I would be attending more games if the prices had not skyrocketed. Years ago, I was a season ticket holder at Fenway and some buddies and I shared seats and got to attend about 20 games a year. Modern days, I'm lucky if I go once or twice a year with my family. It's just a very big expense at this point. Sitting in those seats, though, close to the field (if you can get it) is a religious experience. Well, that's how I feel about it.

But, the reality in Boston is that my attendance is not needed to keep Fenway packed to the gills. They can charge what they charge, and enough people will pay. Free market; I'm good with that. With the advent of HD television, I have to say that I can enjoy a game at home with the family a lot more than I would in the bleachers (in the old days) with them. Fenway is a lot cleaner (figuratively and literally) than it used to be. Price of progress, I guess.
