Hi all,

Here's the story so far: Once upon a time in a land far far away there was a guy who had decided that he really needed a Guild F30. He'd played an F20 and an A25, and he owned a D55, but he'd decided that an F20 was gunna be just the right size for him, not too big, not too small, but just the right size.

Now it so happens that there were 3 F30's available. One was a Hoboken 1969 model, pretty rough cond, played and checked out by Joan, but with a crack in the belly. One was a Westerly in need of a neck reset, and the most expensive was an F30 Aragon (Tacoma ?).

What's your thoughts guys, which one to go for, or hold off and see if something else turns up. Need to bear in mind that cost of postage to this far away land is gunna be something between 200 to 300USD.

GAD's dont fit karma wise with me, not too sure how I feel about anything post Westerly actually, anybody got any thoughts or opinions to share ?

Cheers, Ian

Dear Mr West,

It's difficult enough to buy guitars 12,000 miles away from home without someone coming along and hijacking the thread. (This is the edited version of this post, the earlier one was somewhat more impolite).

Thank you for your consideration, and any thoughts about the F30 (s) that you had would be much appreciated.

Cheers mate !!

'dude,

We don't call it hijacking in the States, we call it 'Veering'.

There are two (mostly) positive schools of thought behind 'The Veer'.
One is that most of us are talkative, chatty creatures (Codgers!) who frequently go off subject, but eventually go back on it, so you might want to wait it out, because it will come back around.

The other is that 'Veering' keeps a thread open, so it won't Drop Like a Stone into the Great Abyss of the Archives of Let's Talk Guild. It's sort of like the Old Adage, 'No Publicity is Bad Publicity'.

But, since you're looking for F30 content, I guess I could tell you the following:

I happen to live about 75 miles from the 'F30 in need of the neckset' that you saw on the Dallas Craigslist. As it happens, I have made the Seller an offer that reflects both the risk and cost of a neck re-set, as well as the 3 to 4 hour drive on congested, Metropolitan highways to pickup the guitar and return to my home.

If he takes it, I will buy it, but will most likely see if my 18 year old daughter likes it better than than the '69 D35 I gave her this summer. So, I don't know if you can count on this one being in the running or not.

Best of luck, gilded

Hi Gilded,

Thanks for setting me straight on the F30, much appreciated. I was a bit doubtful about that one, so that's all good. I think.

I apologise for the lapse in etiquette, lucky I edited my earlier post huh !!

Any thoughts on the Hoboken vs Tacoma models ?

Cheers, Ian

There seems to be a general sense that the Corona-era Guilds had some quality control and finish issues, but if there's anything wrong with the Tacoma Guilds I haven't heard about it. Very good guitars...

Ian, If the F30 is the size you like, then have no reservations at all about the Tacoma built version. Of the choices you've given...it gets my vote. I personally like a little bigger guitar...and still slobber over some F40's that I played at a large guitar store here in Wisconsin. They were Tacoma vintage and very nice! From a practical standpoint, if you are extending yourself over the great oceanic reaches and incurring some heavy shipping costs, going with a recently built guitar minimizes a lot of the risk.

One person's subjective opinion... if you get a reasonable price on the Hoboken, I'd seriously consider going for that assuming there's no need for a neck re-set, etc. in the near future. If the Tacoma is reasonable, I'd consider that as well, but those guitars were, IMO, quite expensive new. But, your best bet/value may be with a 90's Westerly era, which turn up from time to time.

Don't mind the veers, they're one of the most endearing components of LTG. Some threads veer so many times that you have to look at the subject constantly to remember how it all started.

Ian, there's an F-30 on craigslist (Brooklyn) New york, you may want to check out $675.00. Someday I'll learn how to post a link. Check it out.

from the way it's written, I think this is the same F-30 that is listed here on FS/FT, actually if you look at the bottom of the FS/FT listing you'll see Brooklyn...I emailed Ian the link last night.

Posting a link is a bit of a challenge if you want a word or phrase to show instead of the actual link. For a Link just click on the URL button at the top then paste your link between the urls in brackets. If you want to post a word or phrase and not see the actual url it's a bit more involved.

Basically you do the same as above, then delete the ] after the first [URL and replace it with = so it reads Next your enter the word or words you want folks to see. Hit preview and see if it worked...

Here's what it might look like but I've added spaces to it doesn't disappear,
[u r l = h t t p ://w w w . j o a n m a u t e . c o m ] m y w e b s i t e
If I enter the same thing and remove the spaces you get My Website

Hi Joan; that's a/k/a a quiz, no? Mr. Brumbaugh called them 'opportunities to show what we know...' You might try the LTG Search function for 'posting pics' ... I think default posted some decent instructions not too long ago .... a chance for you to show what you know ... John

I've little experience with F30's. Russ D has a magnificent
F30R, he kindly let me play it at Arlington last year. It's a special little guitar, I doubt it came inexpensively.

I also had the chance to play a couple Tacoma built
F30s in local shops. Darn nice little guitars with a live feel & sound. Despite the relatively expensive price they sold quickly,

Here's a pic of Hans with Russ's F30R, last October in Arlington.. Note the knob location for the pickup. Very cool guitar.

What a beauty that one is! But interesting that the seller can't even figure out if the wood is maple or mahogany...

I think we need Hans on this one..does this seem like a special order?...does the "Z" story make sense?...what kind of wood?..can't find it in The Book...but then again it's after 1977..

Being referenced over here....

Glad you like it, Jeff; it is special. I got lucky on the price when Linda (my professional wheeler-dealer) negotiated the deal at High Desert Guitars in Santa Fe.

Ian, you asked about later Guild F-30s...

We think this F-30 R NT-HG is a '95, which I think makes it Corona-built. Volume is extraordinary, with a well-balanced high and mid-range with a throaty bass. I can certainly see why folks are seeking them out. Light strings make it silky to play with good volume; mediums let it rule parking lot jams. The electronic bits are solid.

I'm fortunate enough to have played quite a few guitars over the years, working in music stores and playing professionally for a long time now. This is one of my all-time favorites.
It's a biased opinion; hope it helps!
