Received the F-35ce today!

So, first impressions are that it plays like I expected, great low action, comfortable neck sweet sound. It is a little brighter than my dreadnoughts (D15, D25 D40C) and that was a little surprising since it’s the same wood combo as my D40C and is a jumbo.

It’s got a nice but different sound. Quieter than my D15 and D40, with the arched back I didn’t expect it to be quieter but I guess the smaller oval sound hole accounts for that difference? Also, haven’t changed strings or cleaned it up yet so new strings might make a difference. It is more comfortable than I expected too, this being my first jumbo, I guess I expected the size to be noticeable too when playing but it really isn’t.

Plugged in, I really like the electronics, it sounds really good to my ear, I’m not really an A/E player so my ear is “untrained” in this area but it works well and sounds good.

So all in all this is a really good guitar. This one has been around the world and the checking and crazing really shows a guitar that has seen some stuff and may have an advanced “patina” for its age but has not been abused.

I’m not sure I’m going to hang in to it though as the A/E probably needs to be in the hands of someone who plays outside of their living room and though the sound is great and different than my others I don’t know that it will displace any of my dreadnoughts when I reach for a guitar.

Definitely glad I bought it though and a change of strings may just open a whole new world (it’s happened before), so I haven’t 100% made up my mind yet.

Congratulations! But she has an upside down mounted TRC!

Ha, just pulled it outta the box, good eye. TBH I probably won’t change it until I do the next setup and then only if the TR needs adjusting and even then there’s a chance I won’t be paying attention then it’ll be on there that way for years!

These have narrower bodies than most Guild jumbos, which may explain why it feels so comfortable.

Do you mean the waist or the depth? It is a 4 1/2" deep body, I know some have a 3" but mine is the deeper one. I'll have to measure the waist tomorrow to see how narrow the waist is.

I was referring to the depth / thickness. Mine is 3.5" -- I just measured.

Is yours an F-35?

If so, I guess they made two different body depths. Here is a pic of the measurement of mine.

There's a very good chance I don't know what I'm talking about. In fact, I measured my F45CE which also has the oval soundhole.

Apologies!

Yes, body depyth varied by model and era. The earlier builds of the '80's tended to have deeper "standard depth" bodies, later ones became quite shallow like my F65ce, 3"

There was even a full 4.5" deep FF5ce.

Personally I think more of the "comfort" comes from the narrow waist as opposed to a shallow body but it could just be the way I'm built.

I find narrow waist guitars fit my wide waist body very well. :)

Is your one really a F-35CE? Just asking as I thought when the 3" models were introduced in 1992 the F-35CE was deleted from the line.

The F-35CE was only available 1990, 1991 and maybe some in 1992. The 1990 catalog showed 4 1/2":

Yes sir, it is one of the early ones, if I’m reading the serial number correctly, the 25th produced?

"Yep" :), although by 'early ones" in this case we meant the early generation of the "family" as Ralf explained, "pre-or post-'90" as opposed to F35ce's specifically.
