ecig??? I thought that was a one-hitter!

I smoked for 25 years; smoked my last one on the way to the hospital with chest pains. Didn't have a heart attack but I was on the verge of one. Never smoked another one, never cared to. It will be 15 years in March.

Congratulations, Tony! Think how many positive effects there have been on your life! The more distance you put between yourself and cigarrettes, the better.

I've owned two different versions. Mostly just to cut back or to have in case I was trapped in an airport due to a delayed flight, or was staying in a non-smoking hotel. Let's face it, a person grumpy over their flight might be a bit less so if they could just go to the bar, have a drink, and a smoke. I also got them to have in a bar on those super cold nights where it's just too cold to go outside. They were ok at first, and maybe I just didn't get good ones. Overall they were just too awkward and getting a decent drag off of it was a bit of a pain. They were also very inconsistent drag to drag, so needless to say they've just been sitting in the pantry for well over a year now. I'd be willing to give it another whirl if I could find one that functions a bit better.

I wonder if the Indonesians will produce the E-Clove Cigarette.
Probably after the Cubans market their E-cigar.
Not the Indonesians, but in fact the alternative flavored chemicals that are used to "fill" the things are already to market. I stumbled across it when I thought I might have to start making my own a couple of years back, due to the circumstances Qvart described.
By the way Qvart, did you notice that Philip Morris acquired the major Indonesian manufacturer and now there are in fact Marlboro Kreteks offered in Indonesia?
Following in a cynical vein, did it ever occur to you that P-M was finally willing to go along with the legislation (they'd been the major opposition prior to that) because it would allow them a lock on the existing market, because the legislation effectively precluded any new cigarette products from being brought to market because the FDA would have to approve a product's development and it's pretty certain they're not gonna do that, (thus no worries about future competition), but still leave them a loophole to get the cloves into the country?
A lot of that debate was around the idea of flavored cigarettes being gateway drugs for kids.
Mkaes me wonder why I still see candy cigarettes on the shelf at my local liquor store. 'Course, they're not made in the USA..
Just sayin', even though I cherish my vice doesn't mean I can't see some naked cynical greed and hypocrisy inside the FDA and tobacco-industrial complex.

I'm surprised I didn't know that. Altria (the parent company of Phillip Morris) has been branching out into other markets/industries in the last few years as cigarette sales have been declining. They acquired US Smokeless Tobacco (Copenhagen/Skoal/Husky/Red Seal) and - a huge moneymaker - Black & Milds. So yeah, I'm not surprised.

In fact, there are only three companies represented in my entire cigarette display case: Altria, R.J. Reynolds, and Lorrilard (Neport). Hell, even American Spirits (Santa Fe Tobacco) is owned by R.J. Reynolds (but they were smart and didn't try to make any changes).

8) So far, at least. In fact that probably would involve exactly what I mentioned before. ANY changes or new product introduction would have to be approved by the FDA before any new product could be marketed. That's highly unlikely so the makers basically traded off a small slice of their overall sales (the flavored stuff) for a lock on the market share status quo.
That also means if anybody decides to drop out it'll probably be a permanent reduction in sources.
In fact in full legal nerd mode I was going to post a link to the text of the act itself when I realized that'd probably invite a political debate no matter how scholarly my intentions, so I'll just stop here now. 8)

Considering I smoked 1.5 packs a day, and I'm coming up on 15 years of non-smoking, I've not smoked:

- over 8,200 packs of cigs

- over 164,000 cigarettes

At an average of $4 a pack over that time frame, I've not spent over $32,000.00 supporting the tobacco industry.

Gee whiz, I oughta have money just falling out of my pockets!

On my old D-25M, I used to park my cigarrette between the high "E" and "B" strings above the nut and let it burn there until I could get back to it.

Great! Don't know what smokes go for in Illinois these days, but you've already saved yourself a bunch of bucks and lot's of breaths with more to come. Keep it up!

Magnificent steer away from going "over the cliff", too. :D
And yep, I used to park 'em between my strings, just like John Cipollina on the back of the first Quicksilver Messenger Service album.
I might also point out that I smoked regular nicotine smokes for a while in my youth, then quit 'em for many years. Then one night I experimented with a pack of the notorious clove cigarettes when I was looking for something to replace a far more dangerous habit which was sourced from South America but widely perceived as relatively harmless, at the time...
That mission (replacing a larger danger with a smaller one) was accomplished, at least. In the meantime, I am consuming less and less tobacco and cloves as time goes by, but I do support anybody who's happier with completely eliminating it from their lives, I probably will wind up there myself someday.
I seem to be lucky to be able to avoid the deep physical subjugations of addictions, but that doesn't mean I'm immune to the psychological yearnings. Over time though the rewards are gradually diminishing compared to the hassles of usage.
Gone from as many as 100 to about 20 a week in the last 15 years.
My septum, thankfully, remains intact.

That's an impressive statistic!
Belated congrats on quitting....now if you could just put your hands on that $32K!

Cheers,
Joe
Exactly! I figure I've saved $700 (based on $7 a pack) since I quit. So how come I'm just as broke as I was then??????

If you quit the same way I did, you're spending it on food.

I dislike the attitude that tobacco companies are evil, or morally worse than any other industry. I would prefer it if discussions on smoking and tobacco people would refrain from language that is accusatory or anger based.

Nope. 3 months before I quit smoking, I gave up my daily 3 large McDonalds cokes. Down 37 lbs and still going. It's nutty.

I've worked in tobacco litigation for as long as I've had my job, almost always in DEFENSE of the tobacco industry.

Remember the movie "The Insider" with Russel Crowe? He played a character named Dr. Wigand. I've met the real Dr. Wigand.

If the tobacco companies handled their business in any way like the alcohol industry, we wouldn't be here. But they didn't. What the tobacco companies did instead was deeply troubling to anyone who has a child. I'll let the internet be a resource if anyone wants to know more, but the fact remains: while it is annoying to see the word "evil" used so often to describe the tobacco industry's (particularly the marketing department's) past behaviors, it is really hard to come up with a more appropriate adjective.

If they, for instance, made FOOD, they would be 100% out of business.

What other industry could kill half a million people in the US annually and get away with it?
