A while back I sold an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Silverburst to an 11-year-old boy who was practically shaking with excitement about the prospect of buying it when he came over with his dad and older brother to try it out. About a week later, I e-mailed his dad to see how he was getting along with his new guitar. The father reported that the kid loved it, had named it Eleanor, and had refused to let his older sister use it to play Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne.

The reason? "Eleanor doesn't play that kind of music," the kid said.

I laughed out loud when I read that. (No offense to any Avril Lavigne fans out there).

There's an addendum the Eleanor story. I e-mailed the kid's dad yesterday asking how the boy was getting along with Eleanor, and the father replied that the kid is very protection of Eleanor and plays all the time. He's started a band and now has another guitar on layaway, a transparent red Ibanez he has named Lucille.

I told the father to tell the kid that he'll have to be careful to play each guitar equally or one might get jealous of the time he's spending with the other. That's the problem, I said, when you give guitars girls' names.

When informed of my cautionary advice, the kid said he will be fair, but women don't share. The kid is 11 and he already has one of life's greatest mysteries figured out. There's hope for the future yet! :p

The kid's an original- the real kind- and he can't do any better than that.
My hat is off to him!Next time you communicate with him, tell him he's got fans on the LTG board, and tell him one of them said, "don't stop."
