I went to see Blackie and the Rodeo Kings the other night. They had Tara Lightfoot with them on vocals and guitar. Great show. Very spirited. But poor sound from the FOH PA. :(

The interesting opening act was Digging Roots, a group which ranges from a duo (the husband and wife core, Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish) to a six piece, size depending upon what the gig will support (I guess). They were a three piece the other night, the husband and wife with their son on drums. Tom Wilson (son of Tom Wilson of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) joined them on bass for one number.

Raven and ShoShona are both from within the larger Anishinaabe nation (I think) with ShoShona being more specifically Ojibway. They blend Blues, HipHop and native music. Raven is an absolute killer guitar player in a sort of bluesy, post-Hendrix, slide style. This does not come through as strongly on studio things as it does live.

I have started the clip at the point Raven starts to play guitar and sing. The song is about Residential School survivors. You can back things up if you want the extended political preamble. This preamble will be less meaningful for and less targeted at people who live outside of Canada. It may or may not interest you.
