Not sure if this has been posted here before. I've changed strings on 3 guitars lately and thought, "What a waste that I just throw these in the trash!!" Then a Facebook friend posted this link. I think it's a great thing. You collect points but even better than that, all that great string material gets recycled. And it was Earth Day yesterday, so.... this is my contribution! :encouragement:

And if you play electric guitar and use flat wound strings you go through way fewer strings. Come on, Tom. If Bob Dylan can go electric you certainly can. :tongue-new:

Tom, that's really great. I don't recall anyone ever posting that before, and I didn't know about it.

I've seen people do some very creative things with those used strings, but mine always end up in the landfill. No longer.

Brad, thanks for that. I'm not sure that anyone would really want my second-hand strings. Ugh. But, I'll consider that next time.

Well...

There was once a thread here about "strings for vets" of some such program that a member here used for acquiring strings and more for a national initiative he was part of. To me that was a good thing, and shame on me for never sending any (that I remember).

However my recent dealing with D'Addario regarding the replacement of a single, stinkin' .025 nickel bronze string that broke while bringing it up to pitch...yes, plenty of winds on the post, no other string before or since has snapped there, George was all "we'll take care of it..." ...makes me look at this just a little ascanse...

Sorry for such a bitter post after so long. Good news I guess is that I'll be a GHS guy now (after using up my cache of Guild strings) :smilet-digitalpoint

Bill, that happened to me with Red Strings. I bought a set. I kind of liked them but the G string had damage.... looked like the string had run through a roller or something and it was all flattened out. Not only that but it was DEAD. Just sounded AWFUL. So I took a photo of the damage and send them an email with the photo of the damage. Told them I really wished I could test out the strings, but that I had to buy another set to replace the damaged one. That I now had purchased two sets and was missing a G string. Maybe they could send me one, please???

Nothing. I had the photo of the guitar with BOTH sets of strings and the photo of the damage on the G string and ..... nothing. Ever.

I'll never buy RED strings again.

I still love GHS strings but I'm going through an Elixir phase just because I'm tired of changing strings so much. I got selected as a product tester for Elixir and they sent me a set of PB strings in light. That's all I know about them. They're fairly vague, probably so as not to taint the responses. They're really nice. I put them on the DV-72. I've got another 2 weeks on them and then I do a followup survey (already did the initial one) and then send them back for them to test or whatever they do.

I'd buy these strings. They're really crisp and clear and keep an even volume across all the strings. The clarity is nice and they have a real nice CHIME to them without being too bright. Hopefully, I'll find out what they are one day. :encouragement:

Bill, Tom,

Not to stir up bad memories, but did you guys buy these strings from a local retailer? Online? I'm just wondering, in a case like this, if a local store or even a big string retailer would fail to get you a replacement string. I'm thinking that they would certainly have more clout with a manufacturer than an individual customer.

Regardless, I agree with you guys... I find it deplorable that a manufacturer like D'Addario wouldn't send you a free set of strings with a complaint like that! Wild!

I've had a set of those Red strings waiting to go on a guitar for quite a while now. I wonder if they've had some manufacturing problem? I'll have to open those up sometime. My 6 strings don't get much playing time. :)

A buddy and I bought 15 sets of nickel rockers from GHS. Turns out the unwound strings had some pitting issues (packaging issues). Called the Internet seller and things seemed kind of slow in terms of getting replacement sets.

Called GHS. Described the problem, they said, "yep, you're right. How many sets?" We told them and they sent the strings to us. All of them. That was about 2 months ago.

Thank you, GHS!!

Well, whats that thing about "if you don't have something nice to say?..." My new Nickel Bronze G string showed up yesterday, in a packet with its own serial number no less! OK, my upper back has been bared, the flogging may begin :hopelessness::hopelessness:

As to the sound...I think they have their own tone. Not bad, just a little different, not as bright as either PB or 80/20. I can see where they would be good for recording, pretty controllable. Not sure the volume is there as it is with the other two, have to wait and see. They play nicer than the Martin Retros I had before, have a feel that is not as stiff.

So any adverse thoughts I brought up for Mr. D'Addario you can scrub, their Customer Service came through. Do still like the GHS Vintage Bronze and Bright Bronze though...:love-struck:

Well, golly. I feel pretty stupid that I never thought of that! This was quite a while ago and before I started doing all my string buying through Strings and Beyond. They have great customer service. But I know I picked them up somewhere here locally. It's been so long I can't even remember now.

Glad to hear that GHS stepped up to the plate, Harry!! I love that company. And I'm with Bill, although I try other strings occasionally, I still gravitate towards the GHS Bright Bronze or the Vintage Bronze. They're consistently GOOD!! :encouragement:

p.s. - Bill, if you'd not said something critical, that string NEVER would have showed up.... you know that, right? LMAO!! :stupid:

Hey, Tom. I also do almost all my string buying from Strings and Beyond. Those guys are a fantastic group. I know if I ever had a string problem, they would send me a box of replacement strings and probably $50 worth of swag because they have great CS there.

It's funny what you guys said, though, because I almost certainly would've gone straight to the retailer and would not have even thought of the manufacturer with the kind of issue(s) you guys experienced.

Anyway, best wishes, and may have more string sets than guitars!

By the way, what set of strings would you guys recommend for an F-512?

:) ;) :D

Rotosound did the same for me, with bass strings. When one string broke while I was re-stringing, I emailed the company. They sent a replacement string, plus a whole other set!
Haven't tried their guitar strings.....

Hey Chaz...these:

Ross, Rotosound also did the same for my son who cut a string too short when stringing a friend's bass...they didn't have to do it, but their rep (in LA) was aces.

Their acoustic strings are very good, had them several times on my Tacoma-D55. they also have a string set, unwound at the bridge area, which is interesting to try..."Jumbo King" I think, maybe...

:) :) Very cool, Bill, but I was actually kidding. I have probably tried more 12-string sets than most folks on the planet :) Truth is, I actually *haven't* tried the Guild-branded balanced-tension strings, but they're D'Addarios if I recall correctly, right?
