I'm thinking of buying an x-170, but I'd like to know if it has Fender, Guild, or SD-1 pick ups. The seller claims it's a Westerly 1997, and a picture of the back of the headstock shows a serial number AK171303. Guild's "Dating Your Guild" page notes the last serial number in 97 as 170799. Any thoughts?

Hello Finn,

That would be an X-170 from the year 2000 and the pickups should be the Fender designed humbuckers.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

You will read opinions out here regarding which pickups are good and which are not. Keep in mind that tone is very subjective. I have owned Guild guitars with nearly every version of humbucker. I have owned a 2000 and a 2001 X-170, and they were both fantastic playing and sounding guitars that sounded every bit as good as a late 80's X-170 I also owned. Play it if you can, and if you like how it plays and sounds don't worry about what the pickups are.

No it's not. There is good tone, and bad tone.
It just so happens that all the good tones I hear are the ones I like. All that proves is that I have good taste.:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Look at you!.... all grown up and matured now, preaching the power of the ear!
... but what is the best mode for improvisation on.... say... Jazz? :hopelessness:

Well, I bought it, it's been shipped and should arrive in a few days. It looks sexy- I'm excited. (Pics will follow.) Guildman's suggestion to give the Fender pups a fair chance only makes sense, but if I decide to replace them, I have a bit of a quandary: There is a respected winder near me (Electric City Pickups) and assuming I will replace the Fender pups, I'd like to try a set of his. He advises that his pick ups are designed for 500k pots. I have no idea what pots are in a 2000 x-170. I've scoured the web, but have been unable to find specs. Anyone here know?

Congrats, and we want pics when she arrives!

I only have a X-170T schematics (unknown date) and it has 4 times 500kohms pots. So most likely 500kohms per pot is what your guitar uses.

Yeah, Guild and Heritage are my favorite brands. There couldn't be two people stupid enough to pick a user name that sounds like a Nordic pervert.

One thing to think about on the pickups Finn, I know that GAD had a set of the Fender made pickups rewound and loves them. If you don't like the tone of the Fender Pickups you can always see if your guy can rewind them for you to your specs. That would keep the original appearance and mounting and give you the tone you are looking for.

If you do decide to change them out, the great thing about them is they are of standard humbucker size. That makes your choices for replacements almost infinite without modification to the guitar itself. Good Luck and I hope it gets there safe!

Curiosity compelled me to put a set of Electric City "Electric Flag" pickups in the x-170. I was a bit hesitant because it sounded good with the Fenders, but I couldn't be happier now. It went to the luthier sounding good and came back amazing. I'm sure it's not the best sounding guitar on earth but, - well, I'm not so sure.
