I'm thinking of buying a JF30-12 that has a serial number of JF300976. I'm trying to figure out the year. It's definitely an 80's to early 90's, but I'm not sure which year. The seller doesn't know for sure either. According to the http://www.guildguitars.com/resources/guild_dating.php, that serial number is for JF30's and not JF30-12's. However I wouldn't be surprised if they used the same serial numbers since it's the same model. Also, there seems to be a huge increase in production in 1990. So my guess is this is a '90 JF30-12. Also, wouldn't the nut width be 1-13/16"? They didn't start using 1-7/8" nut width until Fender took over, correct?

Hello MrBoZiffer,

The JF30-12 with serial # JF300976 is from 1991. Forget about the dates and numbers on the official Guild website! Ask the seller to look at the neck block date, which should confirm the year.

Sincerely,

Do you remember what the nut width was? What kind of neck profile did it have?

I've personally seen JF30-12s from that particular period with both 1-13/16" and 1-7/8" wide nuts.
With the way that Guilds were manufactured a difference of 1/16" at the nut between two instruments of the same model would be nothing unusual.

Sincerely,

Mine was 1-7/8"
The neck was wide and thick and it became very difficult for me to play it for more than a few songs.
Getting old sucks!

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm going to have to wait until I can play one in person before I can make a decision. I have a Rick 12 string electric and the neck is really thin for a 12. I really like it that way, so I'll have to wait and see about an acoustic.

Not to make it even more confusing, but my my '92 is actually 1-27/32" (i.e., it's in the middle). I'm not lyin'; I've measured it with my ruler and my caliper.
