That's just nuts. There's a lot of folks out there that just have way too much money, especially when you consider that Fender Mustangs aren't even all that well-regarded amongst the cognoscenti.

I have always toyed with getting a Mustang, just because it was the Fender we could almost aspire to when I was growing up in the mid 60's...anything else would have been so expensive you truly did not consider it. But I don't care how vintage it is, they are a flat sounding guitar as is, and cannot think CC could possibly get me to part with several (hundred) times my house mortgage. What I wonder is who were the other high bidders? Did RRHF actually lose out?

That said, my brother had a Musicmaster (II?) in the 70's, which I was able to play a fair bit, and it was a nice playing guitar. But a student model, as the Mustang, none-the-less.

Wonder if on the back of the guitar is a taped reminder as to how to formulaically craft a Nirvana tune?

"Clean channel w/ chorus=sing, distortion=scream, clean channel w/ chorus=sing, distortion=scream, guitar solo mimic vocal melody, distortion=scream"

:p

You could buy two Hendrix Woodstock Strats with that kind of bread, and get change back from your dollar!

But, whoever is droppping the big bucks is not just buying a Fender Mustang, they're buying a little piece of history that's important to them -- and whatever bragging rights come with it.

Well, I get it. I just wish I had the cash to play in that league. Not for something owned by Cobain, but there are others I'd want because of provenance.

And, of course, if it had been a '64 Polara, it wouldn't've mattered. :D

I get it too, and the underlying factor is this.... https://money.com/average-age-super-wealthy-america/

There is an entire generation that has an emotional connection to Cobain as strong as Lennon/Macca was to the 60's generation. I think we're just used to the kind of wealth that would be willing to spring 4.5 mil on a guitar just to hang it on a wall and say, "look what I have!" traditionally came from the 65 and older group (which predates serious interest in Nirvana) That's no longer the case. Many of America's wealthiest are now under 45 yrs old!

I wouldn't have given you $4.50 for it otherwise. Of course, I'm not part of the Cobain generation.
