Love Butterbeans, don't think I've ever had fresh ones. The big deal around here are purple hull peas, which are like blackeyed peas only smoother and more creamy. Last summer when I bought a bunch, I told the lady I was going to make a salad with them, with ham, tomatoes, red pepper, red onions and dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette. She looked at me like I was crazy...dang hillbillies!

You can rinse your chopped onion with cold water, takes the bite away.

We try to grow purple hull peas but the #%@*! deer can destroy the field in one night. That's exactly what happened last year. The whole field of young plants eaten in one night. We did not replant, there was no use.

I used to be, "Oh, don't shoot Bambi", but for some years now when my husband says he saw deer I say, "Kill them before they eat something!"

That does look really good. Only change I'd make would to add a little acid to it: Lemon juice or a little vinegar of some sort.

Dang...frickin' deer are a nuisance!

The outfit where I buy them seem to focus on purple hulls, sweet corn and melons. Really nice folks, free peach ice cream on weekends!

Free peach ice cream?! Yum! Homemade?

We've had high winds the last few days and when we do I park my truck in the field to avoid falling limbs (pecan trees). Last evening I drove it out there and scared off a herd of at least 15 deer. I sat glaring as their white butts disappeared into the bushes.

One problem is the 700 to 800 acres adjoining us, which used to be a hunting lease, recently sold. The new owner has cut the timber leaving just the occasional oaks, and all underbrush has been cleared out so there is nowhere for deer to hide. Looks like our deer problem will be worse than ever.

Two years ago we grew a beautiful field full of purple hull peas that deer did not bother, because we had a cat. Likely a Florida panther although we never saw it. Heard it a few times, though, which can be pretty scary in the dark. However during that time we lost two calves, one was partially eaten and another disappeared entirely. As soon as deer started showing up in the fields again we figured the cat was gone.

I found it interesting that there were no deer at all while the cat was around.

My cousins are famers up North Michigan, they call deer "speed beef." They carry their deer rifles on the tractor with them; they always have venison in the freezer. Corn fed venison, mmmm.

Is there a deer season up there, or are we not going to talk about that?
