Sorry I can't link it, but there's a black D-50 currently listed on eBay. Run a search and see if you think it's legit.

I've never seen a rosewood fretboard on a D-50 before. And, is the label legit or a little suspect? I contacted the dealer and he swears it IS a D-50.

What say ye?

This makes me think about Frono's threads about "branding". All of a sudden the damage done to a manufacturer's repution by counterfeiting takes on a whole new light for me. It's not just scurrilous, but what about the poor soul who may actually buy this, not knowing any better, 'cause they have limited access to legitimate sources, and is buying based on a brand reputation even though they're not interested in becoming "experts" about the brand...I guess the counterpoint is that if you're buying on "eekbay" and spending that kind of money you gotta REALLY "Caveat Emptor" and do your due diligence about provenance. In any case it's just sad and makes another case for the role of a real live music store.

I love that quote..... i think it was from 'worked in Westerly" about the paint jobs hiding small but vital cosmetic mistakes and factory flaws. It was something to the effect of .......Guild didnt regularly MAKE black guitars, but "BLACK GUITARS HAPPENED". :D That of course does not really apply to THIS......THIS is a FRAUD and a RIP OFF!

Only black dreadnoughts I've ever seen listed as regular production were D25's and Richie Havens D40's.
Something tells me I have seen a later D-30 in black... but I may be mis-remembering. D

Hey taabru45,

Oh yes, and keep in mind that the first black Guilds that you would see on early television shows were actually 'blonde' instruments that would get the 'black shoe polish' treatment before they were allowed in front of the cameras. Guild was one of the first to offer 'black' instruments as a 'special order' during the '50s but it would take until the early '60s before black was offered as a standard finish.

There was a thread about the introduction of colored finishes on Guild guitars several years ago.
You might find it an interesting read:

Been guilty of the same myself on more than one occasion...and I'm certainly not the expert Hans is...he's taught me the value of sticking to specific observations and avoiding speculation...but that thread he linked is too funny!
And having put your recollection out there, someone around here might be able to confirm it!
