Reposting my inquiry here to keep the Bisonic info in one thread.

I am going to install two Novak BS-DS pickups into my Starfire Bass, and I was wondering if anyone has advice on the following:

1. Where I can find wiring schematics for wiring each pickup separately to individual push-pull tone pots?
2. Should I get 250k or 500k pots?
3. Can you suggest a brand for high quality pots or are they all of similar quality?

thanks very much.

I bought CTS pots, 250k and 500k. From what I have read, 250k is for hotter pickups and 500k is for warmer pickups. I will see which I like best.

for reference, here is a head to head on the Guild vs Novak BS setting vs Novak DS setting. I'm happy to stay with my Guild pickups, but if I drop one into my daughter's short scale P bass (she has shown zero interest in it in going on 2 years so it is still hers but I give it love from time to time)... I like the extended bass response of the Novak in the BS setting.

I always thought this was a great video, and showcases the Guild Newark St. Bisonic in a solid body, where to my ears, it appears to really shine. I can see why Serek offers them.

you want to use 500K pots on the Novaks. Lots of love for those pickups around here. This is for your 71 SF-2, correct?

There is no real wiring diagram for double Novaks. I went thru that on my M-85. Ultimately we got it done, but that is not the same circut as your bass. Just replace the pots and follow Novak's instructions (until it works!)

Sounds good, thanks for the confirmation on the 500k pots. These are going into the ‘71 Starfire 2. I’ll work through Novak’s instructions for the neck pickup, get that to work, then duplicate on the bridge pickup. Might take a little while, but it will eventually work! Thanks!

I recently revisited my Soundcloud account and went through the old recordings I had on there for the first time in a long time... when I came across the mediocre comparison of the original Hagstrom Bisonic pickup from my 1970 Starfire bass and a Newark Street BS-1 pickup.

Please note, my recording set-up was rather primitive at the time, so I just did the best I could with the equipment I had. Therefore, take this with a grain of salt, but still worth listening to. Even though I did my very best to get the driest signal possible with minimal EQ, compression, etc... primitive recording setups will inherently do a bit of coloring. In person the difference was very notable and I feel only some of that difference was captured here.

*Also worth mentioning, there was some confusion that came up around this recording because somebody who I considered to be a very reliable source of truth told me that they were 100% certain that the vintage pickup from my 1970 Starfire was in fact not a Hagstrom, but an early Fred Hammon Dark Star pickup. I was at a loss, because the friend I got the bass from, who knows his Guilds and Bisonics and owned it for a long time.... definitely would have no reason to knowingly lie about the originality of the parts, especially since he gave me a super good deal on the bass, but alas, I did end up making a public disclaimer post since I didn't want to spread any misinformation... ANYWAY, fast-forward a few years and I had a chance to chat with Fred Hammon about this particular pickup. When he saw the photo, he said he was 100% certain that was a legitimate, original Hagstrom pickup, consistent with what would come in a late 60's / early 70's Guild bass. Sure enough, when I acquired my 1970 M85-II bass with 2 original Bisonic pickups, they were essentially identical to the challenged specimen in my Starfire... so the person I thought was a very reliable source of truth on Bisonics, turned out to be wrong. All that to say, even though the legitimacy of my pickup was challenged, it is conclusively confirmed to be a 100% authentic Hagstrom Bisonic, beyond any and all doubt.

That Serek shootout is what made me stick with BS-1 rather than the others. Sounds like it has the most presence and clarity, which I always like.
