I take my llittle '57 M20 just about anywhere. It was called the "Economy M20" when it was made, it's solid mahogany throughout and tough like rocks. The finish is not great, probably hasn't been since 1959 or so - the rest of it is indestructible.

Here we go again...

I've just got to stop going to Guitar Center most every day. The Yamaha FG730S arrived on Wednesday, and it arrived basically in new condition. To the point of not having a mark anywhere on the Tobacco Sunburst, and still having the plastic on the pickguard. There's something about it that sounds kinda thin though, most of which I attributed to the cheap plastic nut and saddle, and probably the laminated sides and back as well.

As things are so slow at work right now, I usually kill some time over at the local GC. Today I go in there and...hmmm...what's this? A used Epi Masterbilt AJ500M that wasn't there this past Tuesday. I take a good look at it, and there's literally not a mark on it, and I like the satin finish, too. I sit down and play it for a while and it literally blew me away. Man what a sweet axe, and the bass that comes out of it is just thundering, so I look a little closer. That sure looks like a bone nut and saddle there, which I guess would explain some of the sound.

Lastly, the price. $299, and it includes a case. I'm sold. The only problem is that here in Suffolk County NY (maybe other places too), there is a "Pawn Shop" law, where retailers must hold on to a used guitar for 21 days until it can be ascertained that the instrument hasn't been stolen. I could deal with that I guess but it just feeds my GAS. So I put 10% down on it and tell the manager Pat to put it in the back away from everyone's grubby hands. I'm allowed to pick it up on May 6th. Glad I have a few others to play in the meantime.

Now all I need to do is sen the Yammy back, unless one of you guys here wants it. Damn, that Epi is sweet...

That's exactly what happened to me, too! Except it was a DR500R, and it didn't have the bone nut and saddle. Price was $279, without a case, though. Still, I couldn't resist, it's now the guitar I use for alternate tunings. :)

Mine was also under the pawnshop law, so I had to wait a week before being able to leave the store with it.

Those Masterbilts are well built!!

I seem to recall there was a nice little Masterbilt EF500M for sale right here, not so long ago. :D

It's gone now,
Joe

I remember, and would have, but I wanted a dread. The F20s plenty for me. I thought the Masterbilt was so good I might skip the D40 I've thought about. Really nice guitar, even with bad strings. :D

Hi JC, long time no see! Where'd you buy that guitar? I actually didn't know we had a pawnshop law out here!

See if you can find an old Taylor, or Martin.  Seriously, a lot of the old copies of name brand guitars, made in Japan, in the 70s. are still hanging around, and sound pretty good....they were well built, and with a new set of tuners, if needed, do a good job over all, and that old wood does its job too....Steffan :D

Definitely Taylor - and they can always keep the campfire going

Yup.

for $200 I think the Yamaha FG700S is a super guitar, it was my first ever acoustic and was really nice looking, sounding and had a good feel to it.

It was at the Guitar Center in Santa Clara. They didn't call it the pawnshop law verbatim, but said that used items had to be held (I think it was for 30 days).

I'm never going back there again. I'm supposed to be on a spending moratorium, and I only went to Guitar Center figuring there couldn't possibly be anything I'd like. So much for that..

Yeah, that happened to me at my local GC. Twice. I'm never going back to that store.
