The Yamaha FG-75 was the guitar I learned to play on (this is just an internet photo, not the actual guitar). It has a classical size body, but as you can see, it's a steel string. I borrowed it from my brother-in-law who bought it used in the late '70s for $90. I put silk and steel strings on it and played it for a year before I bought the Madeira that's in my avatar. Interestingly, my BIL still has the guitar! If my memory is correct (40+ years later), I think it was made in Taiwan. I need to ask him if it has a red, black or white label. It really was a good guitar for learning how to play.

Nothing wrong with a good Yamaha, at all.

You can get unlucky with the lower priced ones, but in general across the entire price range, they are well made and highly consistent in quality, and the further you go up the cost ladder the better they get.

I was in a big chain music shop a couple of years ago buying some stuff and decided to look at guitars. There was a young man looking at guitars. He asked the clerk which was the best acoustic guitar currently in stock. Without hesitation, the clerk picked out a higher end LL series Yamaha and said, "Try this." The young man looked horrified, but he tried it for a few minutes and then went back to looking at MOR Taylors and such, things with cooler head stock logos. I asked if could try the Yamaha. It was gorgeous.

I have been tempted by a number of GC series classicals that have popped up on CL recently, but not enough, to get up off my butt and go look at them.

This GC-41 has been saying, "Please come and look at me!"
