Today was my one year anniversary with my employer, following a nearly two year period
of unemployment resulting from my previous employer moving projects off shore.

There hasn't been a single day over the past year where I have not felt gratitude
and extreme good fortune for gainful employment. I have been working at peak performance
and have made several significant contributions about which I truly feel good. The return
my employer has received on their investment in me has, I am sure, exceeded their
expectation!

In the midst of all that, I remain mindful of family, friends and others who continue to
struggle. I have maintained my professional connections and continue to support my
network. I write to my elected representatives often - particularly when an issue
arises related to jobs and the economy. I have offered financial and other support to
causes which I personally believe may contribute towards improving the economic
outlook for us all.

I no longer feel like a bystander. I am forever grateful and fully engaged. I feel less
like an individual and more part of a collective. That enlightenment is a gift which I
hope will continue to inform my decisions and direct my actions.

This whole thread is a testament to the human spirit. Life can be daunting and downright overwhelming at times. What we gain from these times is perspective. I love my job and I'm grateful to have it..... but it's not guaranteed. It seems very little is, these days.

Happy Anniversary, Frosty! And thanks for the reminder..... :)

That's great news Frosty. There's hope for me yet

It's an interesting experience though isnt it: I'd never thought I was a live for work type of guy, but there;'s no disguising that it does express who you are socially, and being without $ and struggling to pay bills by selling off "treasures" sucks....

However I would also have to say that I am thoroughly fed up with rewriting CV's and cover letters ad infinitum. Better luck next year ?

I kvetch a lot about my job. There are a lot of negatives to it, but the fact of the matter is, mail isn't going away any time soon and if you are willing to put in the hours, you can make a decent living. As a co-worker of mine said, "you won't get rich, but you'll eat pretty well".

Thanks for helping me put things in perspective, Frosty!

I definitely echo these sentiments. There are plenty of software developers who've steered their careers toward the money, but I was never one. In any case, like I said, ditto! Nicely put, Steve.
