LTGers may recall that I posted about my job being off shored in January 2009. Since that time, I considered some career alternatives, did a lot of reading, networked with hundreds of new acquaintances, and took some formal training. Gauging the local job market, I made the decision to stay in the software engineering field and refocused my skill set from one specialty to another. Almost two years after the layoff I'm happy to report that I started a new position with a terrific, local employer earlier this month.

I can hardly express how fortunate I feel and how grateful I am for the opportunity to work again. I have never thought of myself as being a prideful person, but this experience has demonstrated to me that my feet could, in fact, have been closer to the ground. I am thankful for that lesson and I will forever be more empathetic regarding the misfortune of others.

My sincerest best wishes to other LTG members who are out of work. May the new year bring each of you positive change.

That's fantastic news.
It's certainly obvious that you've gained a heap of perspective in the process, even though I'm sure it was a tough go.
Better times are ahead! :D

Best to you and yours and thanks for sharing,
Joe

Best wishes, as always, frosty....

Hope the new gig doesn't keep you too tied up through the holidays, but whatever it takes... Enjoy the season.

Thanks guys.

Having been steadily employed for 30 years, I have never lived through such a prolonged period of uncertainty before. One's ability to operate in the modern world changes significantly without an income. Meeting expenses is only part of the challenge. We were fortunate enough to have been savers for years and we made it through with that. We also cut a few, now clearly unnecessary, expenses which I doubt will come back.

West, my hand is fine - thanks for asking. I have lost a fair amount of feeling in my left index fingertip, but that could have been much worse! I can live with this, I can play the guitar.

Chazmo, as you correctly guess I have no accrued vacation time. But I honestly don't care. I've had enough time off to last me quite a while!

Congrats on the new career, Frosty . . . I was laid off once & it also recalibrated my attitude.

What happened to your hand?

"Recalibrate", good word.

Hand injury: careless move at home resulted in a crush injury in 2008. I was fortunate enough to have health insurance at the time, so surgery and PT put me back on track.
