Salt is my enemy. I will be using other herbs and spices, lemon and lime, balsamic, etc.
It can be done. My mother was a hospital nutritionist/dietitian when we lived in Germany, but hadn't practiced it since the early 70's. Many years ago when my father was going through diabetic/heart complications, doctors had him on dozens of daily pills. They wanted to amputate his feet, and who knows what else. My mother put her foot down and put him on a daily regimented all natural diet. Within a year, he was off all those pills, in less than 2 years his big gut was gone and he looked the best he had since his 30's.....and wound up living 10 years beyond what all those doctors had predicted.
Get an herb garden going! Nothing better tasting than fresh herbs on your food, not to mention the medicinal values. And for around $75, you can get an "Aerogarden to have fresh herbs in winter. It's a little tabletop "set it and forget it" hydroponic system. I have one. I grow chives, parsley, oregano, basil, and dill all winter right on my kitchen table! At the grocery, if it's a big chain one like a Safeway, they have an isle for diabetic products. All no sodium (or very low) sugar free snacks. The cookies aren't bad! Crumble them in some plain yogurt. (My dad also used to mix a teaspoon of instant coffee in his plain yogurt, which tasted really good) They even have salt free bread! Who knew you can bake bread w/o salt...but they do, and it's also not bad. Once you have some fresh tomato and greens on it, a few slices of turkey, you'll love it! A few sprinkles of Mrs Dash salt free seasoning, and you're gold.
Make that simple lifestyle change and stick to it....every day....and you'll be on the right track.
All the best, and glad you're back home, Dan
