I have a number of guitars I'm not worthy of but I've learned to adapt. If you have an instrument you can't wait to pick up you'll soon be a better player. Heck, nobody's as good a player as they want to be. One of the guitars I don't deserve is my late 40s Epi w the DeArmond Guitar Mike, probably much like yours. When I run it through my Princeton Reverb I might make mediocre note choices, but the tone is fantastic!

Always work with the best tools you can afford.

Just out of curiosity AlohaJoe, what '40s Epi do you have? I have a 1947 Broadway that is just unbelievable. I was SO fortunate to get my hands on the guitar. Thanks for the feedback.

Part of the way I am putting it into perspective is by asking myself, how many sax players do I know who play "good year" Selmer Mark VIs any given night of the week here in town. The answer? Quite a few. Again, I find it really interesting how our minds work. When it comes down to it and to paraphrase Barney Kessel, it is just a tool, right?

OK, a REALLY nice, expensive tool - but a tool nonetheless.

Plus, twocorgis, I am sure you are selling you and your '59 short...

Well being that an X175 was about one third the price of an AA back in the day, I suppose I feel about 66% less inadequate. 8)

66%? That's money in the bank!

Thanks for all of the links AlohaJoe. Beautiful Epiphone! I managed to miss that thread. I had my eyes on that X500 as well, but am trying not to buy off of eBay when it comes to guitars. No disrespect to any others, I just haven't had very good fortune when it has come to purchasing instruments online without playing them first. But I do appreciate the suggestion.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Ravon. My hesitations are probably the result of my Catholic upbringing mixed with my socialist leanings. Nothing like a little guilt to color one's judgement!

Hey Nick, unless you play the guitar left handed don't be afraid to lean a little to the right in keeping with your Catholic upbringing. You don't have to fall on your right ear, just get a little more weight on that right leg and tap the left foot on occasion :p Besides, if Strauss-Kahn can live in a $50K/month TriBeCa spread while under house-arrest and awaiting trial for "over-indulging" with other women without an invitation you can throw all caution to the wind and splurge for that AA. However, if you just can't get past your socialistic tendencies please give me your money and I will buy the AA

Hi Nick,
Mine's a 1988 sunburst and she's a keeper. Bartolini pup from new - she plays and sounds fine. I play unplugged most of the time so can't really comment on the feedback issue. It's the acoustic sound I've always liked best.
Can't imagine you'd be disappointed. Good luck.

No luck so far, but I am hoping this will lure Hans into the fray.

I have another AA question, specifically for Hans. I was re-reading the quotes from Johnny Smith in the Guild book last night. What once again struck me was how he mandated that the guitar to be made was to equal or surpass his D'Angelico at the time. Hans, do you know if the Guild folks spent any time with Johnny's D'Angelico or was this based solely on Smith's "plans" and visits to the factory? One of the reasons I ask is that the slightly later (early-60s and beyond) Guild AA body shape really does resemble a D'Angelico New Yorker. Certainly the deluxe appointments are in keeping with those guitars.

Thanks, in advance!
