Can anyone tell me how did the soapbar pickups install in the Freshman and Aristocrat models if they are fully hollow? They are recessed if i remember right.

Has anyone had their pickups out and seen underneath?

Thanks

Hello parker_knoll,

This photo should explain it all:

Obviously the pickup poles and the cover have been removed!

wow, that's wicked, thanks Hans. So it's just a little bit of a carve on the ply. I guess it's not so strong. Franz's are so raw when you look under the bonnet. One friend of mine was quite shocked when he saw under the covers on my 1959 x175.

CORRECTION, rather than a carve i can see it's another little bit of wood underneath as a prop.

The laminated top is reinforced by 2 long braces that are placed lengthwise right at the spot where the bridge feet are placed and on which both the pickups are mounted.

This is one of the earliest M-75s in my collection. It's from 1954, which was the first year for that model.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Haha, yes, a fellow Guild archtop enthousiast friend of mine was explaining to another friend of mine what Franz pickups were, and he said something like "it's like a home-made P90.."...

Yes, Hans! Photos just like that!

the good news is I am about halfway in my "Aristicrat fund" so I am less than 1 year away from being able to afford one.

Most of what's out there right now is way overpriced so I'm hanging semi-tough for now. I'm just trying not to give in to the beater one on ebay right now. Although at the right price, you never know. It could give me an excuse to put a Bigsby on it and get a custom guard cut.

can you fit a bigsby on an aristocrat? if the freshman is the same size it doesn't look like there's enought room on mine.
