Ravon,

I talked to an amp builder friend of mine about your situation. He said that most of the players you like played big, loud, powerful amps with robust power supply sections.

He said that if you were going to try and do it with a 40 watt Fender, make sure that your electrolytic caps were fresh, that your power tubes were strong. [i.e., make sure your power section is doing everything it can]

He said Katana pedals are very good (he's going to let me try one tomorrow), but there are lots of other pedals that do just as well. He sets the Katana so it gives him about a six decibel boost. He mostly uses it with Stratocasters (weak pickups), although he has plenty of humbucker instruments.

He said 'get a tubescreamer and turn the dirt all the way off, then push up the level control. Failing that, get a big Marshall and have at it.'

I'll get back to you on the Katana.

Thanks for the tips gilded (and all) :). The main reason I asked these questions as I'm jamming out more and will probably be playing out soon. I'll spend a little and may just order the Kantana. Yes, I definately will have my 40 watt serviced and I'll remind the tech about the electrolytic caps, tubes, etc.. I had a power tube go out in my Twin Amp (25/100 watts) last year and went ahead and changed all the power tubes out with GT Golds. I didn't know really know the difference between them and any others... any way that's what he sold me and replaced but the amp sounds great now. I actually owned an original TS years ago, quit playing and sold most of my gear. I could go on and on about the guitars and amps and stuff I used to have.... Artist Award, Mark V, '67 Gretsch, LP, Strats.... :D :) :|

Yeah, I forgot to mention his short stint with Canned Heat, , he's the lead on "Let's Get Together" .
Can you dig, my best buddy turned me on to him in about '73, with "Christo Redentor" and "Baby Batter" which I immediately had to add to my own collection. Manna in radio world dominated by Elton John, Tony Orlando, and the Carpenters....

Oh you cruel cruel man...now I'm gonna have to go get some more ect to erase the revived memories....especially the Manilow reference...
Neil Sedaka "Bad Love" back atcha in revenge! And have a Pina Colada song while you're at it....
(it should be noted that in the late '70's and early '80s my only sources of new music were AM radio in the car and whatever my more sophisticated buddies with avant garde tastes had on the turntable when I visited  )
