Almost sounds like the "VISTA" nightmare revisited!

Actually, it's a lot worse than Vista, which was merely slow and annoying. 8 is a major change to how you interact with your computer. That's the fundamental purpose of an operating system.

Folks,

I deal daily with the religious wars of Mac vs. Windows - and that is what they are - Religious Wars. Unless we are talking about recording software, the debate really has no place on a Guild Guitar forum. I'll tolerate Windows 8 vs. other versions of Windows (which was what the original post was about) if we veer back in that direction but otherwise, this is your notice as to why you may find this thread locked or gone. This is an arbitrary and unilateral action by one Moderator who may be going Rogue. Deal with it. I've had a rough day already.

So, you want me to be LOSING MY RELIGION?

There. Right back into the subject of music......

My neighbor and I both got an HP 15"Pavillion on a special from our internet provider. She's 70 and gave up on it. Complete with 750 gigs etc. $300 if she still has it. Brand new at end of Dec, it has windows 7 installed Steffan

Once you go Mac you'll never go back!
Right on.

I do run Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro using Parallels Desktop because some of my work requires Windows. But I will avoid going to Windows 8 for as long as I possibly can. A totally stupid operating system.

I think you should request the store to install you the latest version of Windows 7 and de-install all that Windows 8 crap.
Windows XP is not longer supported by Microsoft, so you will not get critical updates. That'S not a good idea to buy Windows XP.
Our company seems to not be willing to go Windows 8 (similar to the story with Vista) and only use Windows 7.
Windows 7 is actually pretty good I think.

I returned the laptop this afternoon. I've washed my hands of Windows 8.

I spend a lot of time doing I/T stuff at my firm (and co-founded and co-owned an IT company that had a 20-year run), and I think Microsoft finally got it sort of right with Windows 7: It is stable, quick (on appropriate hardware) recovers gracefully from issues that would have "blue screened" Windows XP, and with some judicious interface selections, it can look/act/feel very much like Windows XP. When we update an XP user to 7, the operating system transition is pretty smooth and easy.

I will not, for as long as possible, install Windows 8 in our business environment; the transition/user interface issues are too great. Giving Windows 8 the Start button/menu most long-term Windows users expect to find requires third party add-on software, an anathema to those supporting business users.

If you are an individual user, responsible for your own training and support, and understand the differences between XP-Windows 7 and Windows 8, go for it. I will be shortly on my "sandbox" system just to get to understand the technology. But it will be some time before Windows 8 arrives on my personal front line home and office systems (all 5 of them).

I think Windows 8 has no place (yet) in a business environment.

Anythings gotta be better than Vista.......

Given a choice between 8 and Vista, I'd have to go with Vista. And I'm not a Vista fan.

If you're like me and you don't like the "Metro" UI in Windows 8, it appears that there's an app for that.

Might be useful, but I'll just stay with Windows 7 for now...
