Reading a post earlier somebody wrote about watching somebody using the tuning key's while playing almost like a bend. Pretty outrageous.
Can't remember who off the top of my head (besides Hendrix), but that trick goes back to the '60's at least, and "nowthatIthinkaboutit", I bet they copped it from even earlier players...
just sayin'. 8)

I suspect the technique is as old as using tuning pegs on musical instruments. Human nature being what it is, someone had a string go out of tune in performance, grabbed the peg - while still playing because the show must go on - and restored pitch. Smart a$$ player in the next generation heard the sound, thought it was cool and would annoy someone, so started incorporating it into performances and the next thing you know....

Brings back memories of my bluegrass days. As I recall, there are special tuners that were developed by Earl Scruggs (at least they were called Scruggs tuners) that allow a banjo player to do this. It was a long time ago and I don't remember the details, but our banjo player played that same song using those Scruggs tuners to be able to bend his pitch and return it to proper tune.

Here's a bit of info: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 347AAYgOmn

Maybe a banjo player here on LTG can enlighten us further.

I remember those tuners, kind of like the end of a ball peen hammer sticking out from the peg.....but much smaller  . they were sold as a replacement unit...I guess this was from around 66 when my banjo and guitar playing friend showed me these....they would nail the note perfectly when you turned the knob...Steffan
