Ahh, that's what I was trying to say, the notch for the reinforcing strip thingy. Thanks. You figured out what I meant. It looks like very precise work. If I were doing it, I'd probably need an extra two or three to make up for for my mistakes.

Cool thread!... must have slipped through the cracks of my attention (and they are many), but finding it now, I'm enjoying every bit of it from page one on.
The quality of the pictured report would almost mislead me into thinking I'd be able to do this myself! So thanks Tom, you're boosting my self esteem!!
Can't wait to hear your impression on the audio part once the project is in the playing stage. (and I don't see any reason why it couldn't sound good).

Starting the bracing of the top. Rosette is already glued in place and leveled out using a scraper and sanding.

This is fun, even at 2 AM.
Glad to see your roomie's using some of my favorite clamps.

Some folks have names for their guitars, I call all of my clamps "Jed," as in "clamp it, Jed!"
*I work alone most of the time!

Good show, Tom. This thread has legs!

Come and listen to a story about a clamp named Jed.

Guitars builder’s friend when he’s working on a dread.

Tom, will you be scalloping the braces?
Are you using a forward shift brace pattern?

I can't tell from the pictures because I don't really know what I'm looking for, I just know that Martin used forward shifted bracing on some of their top of the line guitars in their Golden Era.

I'm not really sure on this, TMG. It's the roomie who's building it, not me. I look and give opinions and .... I just got run out of the room for talking too much so....  He says he's gonna possibly scallop those pre-cut braces and I would agree. They're awfully formidable and big. As to whether it's "forward shifted" I cannot say. I've not had a guitar open like this before (in many years) and I'm not that savvy to know what that is. Once all the top braces are glued I'll post a picture of the back of the soundboard and maybe someone can tell me if they're "forward shifted" or not..... :D

Re: And so it begins......

The soundboard has been braced and the bridge plate glued. Now the scalloping and trimming of the bracing begins. He is going to scallop the braces to improve bass response. So far, so good.....

soundboardbracing.jpg

p.s. - the soundboard is sitting on top of some 60 year old Gibson soundboard blanks. They're old and stained but will probably be used in the next project. Don's brother worked for Gibson back in the 50's and these were in a pile to be thrown out, so he kept them. They've been hanging around for many, many years. I'd imagine they'd sound pretty good. When you ping them, they're really resonant and lovely. I'd imagine aged wood could be a good thing, don't you think?

Re: And so it begins......

Getting old wood would be a bonus. Sink wood that you can get for tops is harvested from trees or logs that have under water for many years, remote lakes, underwater logging, very expensive wod sometimes hundreds of years old. Back in the 70s I heard that Guild was trying to buy some of the beams in old churches, rosewood or mahogany I don't know but they would have been hundreds of years old too. I'm sure those ol.d Gibson tops are very valuable, great photojournalism Tom keep it up Steffan

Re: And so it begins......

The rosewood was cut to accept the heel trim wedge with a black/white strip on each side and it was glued. This has not been sanded or cleaned up yet. The pencil marks on the edge make it look like the wood is cut unevenly but it actually fits really straight and tight. Just needs some sanding and clean up.

The rosewood was cut out to match the neck block slot.

Then the neck was set into the block and dry fit.

Next thing will be to glue the top and bottom to the sides and close it up.
