I Would like to share with you guys a very nice sounding, easy operational amp I saw at The Dallas Guitar Show today. Please Google "Yamaha THR" and also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzKOzppQ ... re=related ...very cool. I think I'm going back tomorrow to buy the 10 watt $299., also a 5 watt for $199.

This is not to replace the real thing but a tool to hold on to your ideas.

Thanks for alerting us to that. It looks like a very useful tool for recording/practice!

I went back this morning and found out they sold out all 23 units yesterday afternoon. They won't be able to get any for a month. The vendor said he wish he doubled his order.

You know, I'm organizing a surprise party for a friend of mine and the restaurant manager will allow acoustics. Seems to me that would be low volume enough to sneak a leccie in.
I'd like to hear someone's impression of this in a home setting.

Ordered mine last night... not sure when stock hits here down under (hopefully soon) but was able to pre order at a nice discounted price from a very reputable dealer. I went with the THR 10... can't wait :D

I ordered from GC yesterday myself, looked like it was in stock but after I ordered it it's on back order. They had a 12 percent off for 48 hours.

Which did you go for... the 5 or 10? I checked with my guys today and they said the units were enroute, yay!

I went with the 10 @ $264. + tax. I have a G-Dec modeling amp and the THR sounds so much better. I think it wll work well for home use.

So my THR10 arrived today... and all I can say is its BRILLIANT!! The build quality is terrific, nice sturdy metal frame about the size of a 4 slice toaster (or smaller even!).

The controls are extremely straight forward but full of feature, so even I could find combinations I like (a lot) without much trouble. I'm not the greatest at finessing the knobs but I do know what I like and the THR's sounds fit my ticket straight up... firing up the computer based THR editor then opens up a huge world of variation all of which can then be saved to the amp as presets but the editor too is as simple as point and click and can all be 'tested' on the fly. Suffice to say, I feel like I'm learning more about different amp/speaker combinations even as I'm using it without having the physical amps on hand to try out.

It took me about 5mins to get the THR working with my preinstalled copy of Cubase 5 (the THR comes with Cubase AI) and after another 20mins I had recorded an eight bar, 4 part instrumental piece with lead, rhythm, bass and drums - provided from ToonTrack.

If there was any doubt in my mind about this unit before, it was all gone after recording those 8 bars... As a practise amp it rocks beyond its small size, as a recording/idea capturing device it eclipses everything I was hoping for... AND IT RUNS ON 8 AA batteries for HOURS if I wanted to (read portable to the max).

In short, I can't compare it to the myriad of stage amps that it emulates but it does work for my ears... and I will be interested to hear how Ralph and others think it compares to gear they already use but for me as a former Mesa Boogie user (twins, singles and quads), it works for me really really well :D

Wow, Mick! Sounds like a great piece of gear and the price is right. :)

Too true Default... Initially I had put it on the maybe one day shelf thinking the price was going to be a lot higher, but at just over $300 Aussie its Mrs Laverda safe too!!

I feel like I should be adding this disclaimer to each post, 'I am in no way connected with Yamaha and receive no proceeds from endorsing this product' lol but it is a wee beaut little thing :D

Seems a lot of folks have problems when running these on battery power. They simply cut out after a few minutes. You guys having any issues?

I haven't run mine extensively on battery but when I did for a few hours there was no problems. I only use Duracell batteries though, learned from years of radio mic experience (Shure, AKG and Sennheiser)

Cheers
Mick

PS. I plan on doing a little vid of the soon to be mine Goldtop Bluesbird and the THR some time next week...
