A dash of microcrystalline wax.

I'd hoped to have it all strung up and settling in this weekend (and to learn a quick demo tune on it.) Fate, and some clumsiness, had other plans. While taking the tailpiece off to microcrystalline the top, it managed to slip out of my hands and ding the top finish in a few spots. Not anything in the wood, just the finish.
Which means I've sanded down in the area, but not to bare wood, and am having to redo some of the French polish. That's one of its benefits, it's easy to repair, the shellac blends into the existing shellac. It just takes time going back through some steps.

Sigh.

Frustrating I’m sure, but an example of why it’s worth buying from someone like you who makes hand-crafted instruments. A guy on the line of a big manufacturer would have picked it up and handed it off to the next stage in order to not mess up his quota.

Almost done with the refinishing. Probably will do more sessions today then let it sit while the oil dries (as much as it can) and comes to the surface (likewise). Then (re-)spiriting off and polishing compound.
The dings were all in the center of the pic, with the operative word being 'were'.

Started to spirit off the redone section but something was amiss. Either it got contaminated, or I rubbed too hard, or used too much alcohol, or the shellac was too old, but I got a streak of rough and sticky.
Broke out the 400 grit again to sand it back smooth and I'm mixing up a fresh batch of shellac to redo part of the redo.

It tasks me.

No, I haven't forgotten about Thistle. I'm just waiting for better weather (interior) to do the spiriting off. It's been on the humid side and the temps have been open window weather, which doesn't help. I'm hoping to get under 50% humidity to minimize any issues.

Today's on the poorer side.

Since temps have remained at open windows level and the humidity has been high unabated, I finally broke down and got a small dehumidifier for the workroom.
Hopefully it'll let me finish the finish in a day or two.

What it's up against.

Dehumidifier is pulling water out of the air...

but still struggling to get much below 70%.

I've kept the workroom closed up, but with 88% humidity outside, (and daily rains), I guess it can only do so much.

Is the humidity making it tough for the finish work to dry, Chris? Just wondering what part of the build is problematical in high RH.

With the spiriting off on the French polish, moisture is the enemy. That's why you use the highest percentage alcohol for the shellac, to minimize any water content. Water can cause fogginess in shellac finishes. Lacquer too, for that matter.

The good news is that the forecast for the next few days shows no rain and temps getting into the 80s, so that'll mean A/C. That should bring things down considerably combined with the dehumidifier.
