Still want a dreadnought? D15/D25/D30/D35/D40/D50/G37.. I think a decent example of any one of these (Especially if you find it on the forum here) could be found in your budget range from your ideal place of manufacture. Oops, almost forgot DV6 and DV52. There was even a model D17 I saw go on Ebay last week for around $300.00, looked to be in Very Good Condition with a cherry-stained top which I personally love. All the types up through the D30 are archbacks (except D25's prior to '74). DV's & D35 & up are flatbacks.
I'm not as familiar with F-bodies but I suspect you could find a decent example of one of those also. FWIW, I LOVE my F65and it's pretty high-end but you might even see one of these in that $800.00 neighborhood. I'm growing fonder of it by the week due its smaller size than the dreads. It's a little more comfortable in the lap.

Sounds like you may want to sell the D4 and add that money and get a D40.
No, put some money in the D4 - will keep it. Just trying to find a good fingerpicker. Maybe les bass, more treble brightness
Ah ha! D30 (maple archback) or D40 (there was a reason they called 'em "Bluegrass Jubilees")
And then one of our members has referred to his D25 (archback) as a "Banjo Killer"

Generalizations are always dangerous, but rosewood dreads do tend to be bass boomy, which is not always desired for fingerstyle. Not that it can't be done, but you are more likely to find a tonally balanced guitar for fingerstyle by looking at smaller bodies such as an F47, F40, or F30. You typically lose some volume but usually gain better string to string balance.

+1 on looking for an F style body if you want a balanced fingerstyle guitar. I haven't seen them go for <$800 very often but you never know. If budget is an issue, then I would take a look at some GADs. The GAD30s are phenomenal fingerstyle instruments, and I have heard only a handful of sitka/hog parlors better than the GAD F20. Yes you may find an old F style guitar for the same price of a new GAD, but you may be waiting a while considering a new GAD30 can be had for ~$650. Anyway if you really are looking for a fingerstyle guitar, then an OM/000 body is the way to go.

Yeah they're about 3000$ new, but 12frets are amazing guitars, Guild should really make a 12fret F-30 and F-20! I'd get one immidietly!

But check this one out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %26otn%3D2

Its got a few dents and its end pin jack has been enlarged, but it should still have the sound! If i was in the states i'd get it for sure!

Basically yes, same body and woods except for the fretboard, described as "morado" wood at Westerlyguildguitars.com (D25s & '40's are rosewood fretboard/bridge)
D40's will ALWAYS be flatback mahogany body/sides/back with spruce top.
You mentioned your budget is flexible. I think you'll be able to find a Very Good Condition Westerly D40 in the $1000.00 ballpark, and I think that would be the upper end of the scale. Like a case queen even.
F bodies still worth considering but they seem to be a lot rarer in those models CJD mentioned, if you want to stick with Westerly built.
BY the way that soundclip Marcellis posted ("Somewhere In Saigon") was probably an F65. My PC's soundcard didn't like that media player file so I couldn't listen, but he's said before it's his favorite guitar to record with. You might want to PM him if you want to find out. Be aware his internet access is spotty so it might take a while for him to respond.

SO 2 hours after that last post this pops up:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19426
I have no connection with this member or any financial interest in this instrument, but it wouldn't surprise me if he saw this thread and decided it might be a good time to list!
ln general transactions between forum members have a very high mutual satisfaction level. A lot of this is because members here are more likely to be able to accurately judge and describe the condition of their instruments. DO do some searching on appropriate packaging for shipment, and for tips on conditions to look for such as neck angle, and action and saddle height, especially if you're considering guitars from sources outside the forum. This is just an "FYI" post of stuff that should be researched, and a good example for comparison to other listings you might see. :)
