ok, with my Crate amp ive never needed a preamp, so this is all new territory for me. since wife & i separated i dont have a much money, so price (as well as performance) is a big consideration.
the open mic ive been playing only has a p a & frankly my guitar sounds like raggedly crap with no volume to speak of. used to be i would bring my amp, but since she kept the car, thats out. anyway, on evil-bay ive been looking at:

http://www.lrbaggs.com/gigpro.htm
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/ADI21.aspx
and any other inexpensive preamps that catch my eye. rather not get into the modeling thing & i do not know what a DI is nor if i need it.
can you help me with any suggestions that i may not have thought of?
as you can see, im in a quandry...a quandry. :?

DI is direct input. You use it if you are going to plug directly into a recording console or the mixer for a PA. It does the physical conversion from a phone jack to an XLR connector and converts from a high impedance to a low impedance signal. A lot of preamps provide DI type services and many amps also have a DI output, not that you can carry your amp at the moment. Since you are not happy with the sound of your guitar through the PA you probably want a pre-amp that supports DI but lets you shape the tone first.

I presume you are happy with the sound through the Crate but if not then you may need to go all the way back to the PU to get the sounds you want.

I have a question, I'd forgotten that I have an old tube driven Dyna tube pre amp for a stereo system....would it work with a guitar, say an old T100d......
