I had to drop my D50 Bluegrass Special off at the "Certified Guild Service Center" today! :x They'll be sending it off to Nashville to the Guild Service Center/Custom shop for evaluation. The binding is slightly shrunk (from day 1) Not sure if they'll attempt a repair or if they'll send me a new one. If so, I hope they can find an exact replacement. :x :x

As I understand it, this is an easy fix for them.
You should get your guitar back and it shouldn't take that long.

Interesting. I thought the repair/custom shop was long gone from Nashville, but there ya' go.

Binding repair on a 2007? Do you have any pictures of the shrinkage? That's the first one of those I've heard abou from Tacoma. The only issue I'd heard of previously was flaked finish.

I don't have any photos, I think it would be very difficult to see the issue in a photo. In fact the separation is so minor you can't really see it without good lighting and reading glasses. You can feel the edge where the binding isn't meeting perfectly with the body with your fingers easily enough. I'm glad to hear this is not a common problem, should mean that any replacement would not repeat itself. I'd be fine with a professional repair as I have my guitar setup perfectly. Although I'd be fine doing that one more time. The biggest problem for me is missing my Guild. It's the only Guild I own. Although I've been hunting for a used D25 for awhile, just haven't found the right deal yet.

Empty nest syndrome? I can't imagine. You really need that back up. We understand ! :D
In that Willie Nelson movie with Slim Pickins and Amy.......Spielbergs ex wife....... She says to Slim, at some point after not seeing him for a while.......'yep I'm all growed up an haired over.'
Well that is your Guild talking to you .......soon. It will be a happy re-union, absolutely, and a great way to start 09. Steffan

Thanks Stephan, that's a good way to look at it. Based on another poster on the Fender Discussion pages experience (he's had his Guild in the Nashville shop for 2 months and thinks it'll be awhile before he see's her again) it'll be like getting a new guitar. Hope it's before spring time... :(

I just found out from Ed Treat at Fender that it is a minimum of 90 days before I'll see my baby again. :x

Sorry Chasmo, I did not. It would have been difficult to see with a camera. I had to put my readers on with a very bright light to see the separation. You could feel it by gently sliding your fingers accross the binding toward the body better than you could see it. I'm starting to second guess having it sent off. It sure wasn't much of a bother, I was more conserned with the condition getting worse down the road.. That's the only reason I sent it off to the Dr.

Thanks for ya'lls support! Maybe if I bought another Guild in the mean time I could be consoled?

Stephan: The movie you're thinking of was "Honeysuckle Rose", and how could you forget to mention Dyan Cannon?

Sorry Curt, hope you're satisfied with the solution, I'm sure he'll do a nice job for you.

I finally picked up my D50 at the Guild Service Center 2-hours from my home on April 13th. Everything looked great! I took it home, played it a bit, cased it and took it out 3 days later to show a friend how nice the repair job was, only to discover that a good section (about 8" on the back lower bout) had re-cracked. Only worse this time. I contacted Guild and convinced the rep that they needed to send out a FedEx call tag so I didn't have to drive 2+ hours each way to the Service Center. It did go back and was put at the top of the priority list to correct the issue. They initially tried to say that the guitar was dropped... but that simply was not the case. At least not by me. They did repair it correctly the second time and I had it back by May 21st. So, in just a little under 5 months I got it back in like new condition! Painful process but all is back to normal and I'm a very happy camper to have my baby back!!!

The dreaded binding-finish cracks returned late in 09. I struggled with the decision but ultimately sent my D50 back to Nashville again.

It's been there since the 1st of March. I was told by the Fender rep that it could take up to 5 months to get it back. "Sigh"!!!

I'm not sure how they "fixed" it last time, but I wonder if it's something a buffer could have fixed? I doubt they actually refinished the guitar. Not sure what they'll do this time. I wish I could get more information about how they actually plan to resolve the issue this time......

Just had to share my pain.. Thanks for listening :x

CurtO,

I feel your pain. My D50 is at the Nashville shop for what I thought was a warranty neck reset since the end of February, and then I receive this email today:

"Hi Sandy,

We received your D50 and working on your quote for repair. I just need to confirm your return shipping address and I can complete the quote for your approval.

Thanks,

Thane Shearon
Manager, Nashville Service Operations"

I must admit that I'm a little concerned, because if I thought that Fender wouldn't warranty the neck reset, I probably would have had my local luthier (who I love) do it. I hope he's just talking about incidentals like fretboard replaning/other fret work/new saddle/return shipping, so I'm just taking a wait-and-see approach.

I got my baby back yesterday. Mostly good news! The biggest issue was a nasty looking patch of grain and finish on the lower bout back side. It turns out my noodle style humidifier was leaking. Guess I should have soaked more excess water from it before hanging it from the strings. Water inside the guitar causes the wood to emit gases and causes all kinds of promblems in the finish. The repair is perfect, there is no way you can see that there was ever an issue and this was not a mfg defect. Cudos to Guild for fixing this under warranty. The other issue with micro finish separation along portions of the binding still exists. It is very minor and at this time I'm OK with it. As long as it doesn't get any worse. Just glad to have my D50 back in my arms....
