Something similar discussed here and mentioned here.

That said, the only comments from folks who have actually seen and tried one seem to be

We had carried the pick punch briefly & sold through them quickly, but so far, I've not had a credit card that I thought would make a decent pick. Unless of course you regularly play with heavy & extra heavy picks.

so I still don't know whether people think they work - in that they produce a useable pick - or that they are worthwhile.

That's kinda cool. And when my credit card expires I can make a real Guild S-100 pick.

If it works for John McLaughlin...

Here's a quote from an interview in Guitar Player magazine:

"What strings and picks are you currently using?"

"I’ve been using D’Addario XL strings, gauged .010 to .046, for as long as I can remember. And after making my own small picks from pie boxes for 20 years, I’ve been using Jim Dunlop Jazz IIIs, though I roughen up the tops with my Swiss army knife so I can get a better grip."

What, no '77 sunburst on that card? :D What an incredibly cool card you've created, Qvartman!

The card predated the '77 by about three months (and obviously it was before I passed the '74 off to Larry Esposito). But it seemed logical to put a picture of what I used the card to buy on the card itself.

One of my favorite "freebies" lately was in my last order from Strings and Beyond.... my strings came and so did this groovy little plastic card with laser-cut picks!! You just punch them out and keep on pickin'...... Pretty fun, huh?

I have the pick punch, well, two actually. The work great. The biggest thing with them is finding suitable material to make the picks out of. If you like relatively flexible picks, then credit cards and motel keys seem to be ok. They are a little slippery or shiny but so are some store picks for my taste. If you want something thicker, with more of a matte finish, then you have to find something another source. Pick material of all types can be purchased, of course, but one of the big attractions to the punch I think is the notion of punching "found" or free materials. Motel keys that a have photos on them, like of pizzas and stuff, can make some fun picks.

motel keys

We must frequent different classes of motel. All the ones I have been to want the keys returned and will make a phone call if they aren't.

Here is a Motel 6 room key that doubles as a pizza coupon. Punch it just right and you get a pick or two with a pizza on it. You could get the Motel 6 or Domino's name but who really wants that.
