Nothing unusual with the weather last night that I knew of. Just a reminder of how close we often come to a random event that could be life changing. In this case a branch broke off a dead tree and fell just missing tbe boat. If the random break was the taller tree branch the boat would have been hit.

Precarious random acts that occur every day and the luck or lack there of that can change your life.

When I saw how close the tree branch fell to the boat it seemed like a metaphor for the close calls we encountered every day whether we know of them or not.

I got the message right away, probably because my Bronco had 2 such near misses from pecan limbs. Twice I moved it because of wind and when I walked back to the house a pecan limb was lying where it had been. Once wind blew our TV antenna down. The bottom bracket held, which was the only thing that kept the antenna from falling on the Bronco. I've been aware of near misses for a long time, and not just the Bronco ones. I must have a tag team of guardian angels.

We just returned home tonight after driving over 7,000 miles cross-country: North Oregon coast to DC & the Virginia coast, down to Florida, back on a more southern route with a diagonal stop in Moab Utah, & happily home again in one piece after enjoying torrential rainstorms and a snow storm.

Lesson learned: People everywhere in this country drive like complete idiots!

... that's about as big as they grow, then they die and rot and fall down.

Over here the birch grows much bigger and thicker - I have 3 birches that are about 30 inches thick at eye-height of grown man. And I expect them to outlive me 😏

Here's my "time to consider the fragility of our existence" event from 2002. This is just a branch that fell from a rather large tree during a big storm. The tree is outside the fence in our back yard and somehow the branch completely missed the fence. It took me the better part of a month to clean up but gave us firewood for a year.

This is the kid's sandbox that was underneath it. You can actually see it in the image above.

This is my Cozy helping me clean it up to show the size of the limb.

We have a lot of White Birch here in Michigan. They tend to fall down after 20 or so years.

The property adjacent to ours used to be full of trees and had various wetland regions. In the housing boom of 2006 developers built 5 "McMansions" and in doing so boxed in the wetland region and raised the water table. A large number of trees fell and many are bordering our property. One of the impressive falls was tree with a 4' diameter. That was a big tree that had it fell in the direction if our house would surely have hit it. As luck would have it...it fell in the most ideal location avoiding all buildings, auto's, etc and landed in the wetland area without the need to do any land cleanup. It's root base borders our property and in the days when my kids would be trick or treating I would light it up. It did look kind of spooky. Just realized that Penn State plays Ohio State at Buckeye stadium so I will be around Halloween weekend. Time to resurect those lights and decorations!!

My back is full of naturally grown hardwoods, mostly too close. I don't walk back there when it's windy, and I'm always dragging limbs to the pile.
