Due to an unfortunate shipping incident, I'm expecting to be in a position to justify how much a near mint F30R is worth. It was insured for $850, but I believe some evidence of value is also expected.

Does anyone have the Blue Book value for a 1998 F30R in excellent condition? Anyone know how much these retailed for back then?

Still makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about this one getting damaged at all.... but thanks for any help here.

Hi Michael; ... isn't every 'shipping incident' unfortunate? :( Care to point the stinkfinger at which shipper?

Well, it was good old trusty USPS, whom I will defend to an extent because to date they've been impeccable in my experience. I've shipped dozens of guitars & pedals & even a few amps during the past few years with them. No issues at all. I thought this was as well packed as any other guitar I've shipped, but it's really tough to stomach because the F30R was in damn near pristine condition.

I'd recently had a K&K Pure Western Mini professionally installed, and though there was not a lot of room in the case to add extra padding, I did stuff as much cloth from a shirt as I could between the endpin/pickup area and the case for additional shock absorption. I also had what I thought was very adequate absorbent at the bottom... anymore & I couldn't have taped it shut at the top. So, yeah, another crack stemming from what, in this case, must've been a very a hard drop on the bottom of the box (endpin area). I keep thinking of things I could've or should've done differently, like use a brand new box, etc., but I think I just got hosed by somebody's rough &/or careless handling.

According to the luthier at the other end, the damage is such that a lot of work would need to be done just to get a better look at it inside to really know the extent of the damage... but it seems to be a huge de-valuation for the F30R even in the best case scenario. There are cracks near the endpin and on the top as I understand it.

Treem, you have no idea... I really debated for a while over even letting this one go, but it was a good trade... now gone to a very sad situation & at best a very unfortunate hassle. We'll see how they field the claim, etc. I really have no idea what to expect.

Thats tough to hear, FungYoung.

Seems very similar to what happened with my 1st DV-72. Had a big ol' crack at the end pin which also caused the top to split at the center seam. It stinks, but I ended up (and I'm skipping a lot of details here) sending it directly to Guild.
I was assured by the Guild-authorized luthier here that they'd be able to correct it 100%, so it would be essentially invisible.

Maybe something to think about once you get the financials/insurance sorted out.

I'm so sorry Michael ... for two reasons; that it was you who got hosed and that it was USPS doing the hosing. Like you, I've been counting on them and hadn't been let down ... at least not in the last two years. Don't have any experience with their claims process ... wth ... hadn't had any claims. I've been in the USPS Bulk Mail Facility outside of Jacksonville FL and watched the conveyors carry parcels up an incline and then let them drop into bins; if the bin was empty and the guitar were falling heel first ... :( John

Michael, I know that you are sadden. And it's not your fault, bro. Things happens! And it sucks that it had to happen to a very beautiful Guild.

I am sadden too. For I've known and played that F30R. And of course the GF30 too!

I also experience damaged claim with UPS Ground Insured with a JF30-12.

My tip is that, TO NOT LET WHATEVER SHIPPING COMPANY FORGET THAT IT WAS THEIR FAULT AND YOU ARE THE VICTIM OF THE THEIR OUTCOME.

Sorry Fungus,
Treem

I'm sorry Fungus. This is the first damage inflicted by USPS that I recall hearing about. Keep us posted on the outcome....good luck to you.

Ugh. Sorry to hear it, fungie. :(

UPS put a forklift (or something) through a friends new Ibanez 12-string that he'd been waiting for for months. Sigh. There's just no good way to do it. I suspect you'll have better luck with USPS from a claims point of view (or whoever files the claim, that is).

Best wishes.

Fungusyoung,
Sorry to hear the bad news.
I hope that USPS makes it right for you.

One thing that I have been told and I do, is to pull the end pin out of the guitar when shipping.
This will help a lot if the guitar is ever dropped on it's end.
I also like to send a humidifier with the guitar when I know that the humidity will be low.

It didn't have an endpin. It did have a pickup in that slot which was installed professionally & glued in so my choice was to remove & destroy the pickup or pack it well. In the past I'd shipped at least 3 or 4 other guitars with the same pickup & another with a Fishman. Never any issues. I just had it installed in July, and it's a great pickup (K&K Pure Western Mini) so it didn't seem like worth removing. I dunno, I've second-guessed just about everything I did, but at the end of the day I know I could not have been lucky every other time I shipped guitars in the same manner. Somebody along the way made a mistake or worse. It was packed well enough to sustain a 2 or 3 foot drop, but something more severe must have happened.

Thanks for all the other good thoughts, guys. I'll be sure to let you know how it all works out. Fingers crossed.
