It appears the '71 sunburst S-100 we discussed here has resurfaced on gbase ... for almost twice the price. Maybe that's because they determined it was a '70, and thus more vintage, than when it was listed on eBay as a '71. And the trussrod cover is still upside down.

... now I actually could see myself parting at some point with the two in the middle, but I'm afraid I'll have to channel my inner Charlton Heston when it comes to the fates of the two on the ends.

Me too on the s-100 GAS!

That '70 sunburst has the bridge screwed right down - looks about as low as it can go.

Makes me think the neck angle may have gone bad?

Or may just need some truss rod tweakage. In the eBay pics it looks like the action is way high and the neck has some serious bow, but...who knows without seeing it in hand.

Possibly, but the ones from before '75 have a really flat neck angle so the bridge doesn't always need to be raised very much. See this thread for a comparison I did with my S-100's.

Hmm, if it is the truss rod it must be out by a fair whack for the bridge to be that low and the action so high. You would think (or hope) that a dealer would attend to something like that in advance, before posting pics.

I imagine that with those big thumbscrews sitting so high it would make palm-muting a bit awkward.

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but what is the wood used? It doesn't look like mahogany grain. Unless I'm misinterpreting the visuals?

I agree, muting must be awkward with the thumbwheels sitting so high. For the record, the '71 I used to have didn't set up that way. It's bridge was closer to the top of the adjustment range than the bottom and the thumbwheels were more or less flush with the saddles, making muting totally normal.

As for wood, I tried to get these here guys to agree it was maple (or maybe alder) but that idea seemed to get little traction. I still insist it's a white, closed grain wood, rather than mahogany, though. That alone makes it pretty unique, though it has some nasty finish issues (looks like somebody was chiseling at the bridge anchors with a screwdriver or something!)...

Now that there's a back picture for the first time (on the gBase listing), I have a hunch the neck is mahogany and body maple.

Considering the Guild factory "waste not, want not" attitude I've read about, it wouldn't surprise me if they made odd ones. The earlier s-100 came in an ash option, I believe, but I don't know enough about the woods to make any call about maple based on the appearance.

Yes someone really hacked it didn't they? I'm ashamed to say that as a teenager in the 80s I totally destroyed a Tokai Les Paul, believing it to be a worthless Japanese bunch of junk.

The way that bridge is, the thumbwheels are the same height no matter how high the bridge is. They sit in a metal "cup"...kind of like a ball and socket joint...and turning them raises and lowers the bridge, but the screws stay the same height. On the early reissues with the roller bridge, they actually screw in and can be made to be much lower. As far as muting, once you get used to them sticking up like they do, it is actually less effort to mute...at least for me. I just rest on the thumbwheels and only have to slightly roll my palm to make with the chugga chugga.

Yeah, I know how they work. The lower the bridge is adjusted, the more the thumbwheels stick out above the strings. Looks funny to me with the bridge bottomed out like that!

I have seen a few that way though that have seemingly tight neck joints but still a bad neck angle. (Actually, my SF-XII is that way, but, since the fingerboard floats over the top on the older SFs, I suspect the neck has actually pulled into the body some)
