I have a 67 Polara and I bought it new in 67. The bridge pickup has less gain than the neck pickup and has always been that way that I know of. My guitar has the 3 way toggle switch and the black slider switch on it. Is there something I can do to fix this problem without taking away from it's value?

The serial number is SB 235

Did they use two different pickups and if so could they be backwards? They are single coils. I have never taken this guitar apart.

Almost no guitar or pickup company had dedicated neck or bridge pickups as far as output goes back then, so that's highly unlikely.

What is possible though, is that the outputs of your pickups don't match - you can check this with a voltmeter, usually without de-soldering the pickups, just plug a short cable into your guitar and get your reading from the plug on the other end of the cable.

Keep in mind though, that on any guitar, there's more string energy near the neck than there is close to the bridge, so two pickups that have equal output set at about the same height from the strings won't sound as loud - the neck pickup will want to be louder.

Have you tried lowering the neck pickup away from the strings and cranking the bridge pickup up as high as is still practical?

Thank you. I will try what you say and see if I can get it to be louder.

I was doing some research on my guitar and this is what I found out:

I don't know if they were built in 64 because they were serial numbered different in 64. Starting in 65 each model had it's own serial number.
In 65 the serial numbers started at SB101 and ended at SB169 that means that 68 were built that year.
In 66 the serial numbers started at SB170 and ended at SB220 that means that 50 were built that year.
in 67 the serial numbers started at SB221 and ended at Sb251 that means that only 30 were built that year. That was the final year of original S100 polara. So for the total run of Polara there were only 168 built of course we don't know if any were built in 64. That makes mine the 19th unit built of the 30 in the final year of manufacturing.

Nothing to add really, but if you are going to check the outputs, let us know what the readings are. I have a couple of those pickups lying around and I could check if there's one that would be a better match.

On a sidenote, can you tell me if your Polara has the regular Guild headstock with the Chesterfield inlay? It's for my Guild database!

From your description it sounds like your Polar is the model with the white Mickey Mouse pickups and the little slide "setting switch". Correct? On this model your vol & tone controls act like a master vol & tone for the two slide switch positions correct? What color is your guitar? My guitar was sunburst and had the reverse fender type head.

It is cherry if I could figure out how to post an avatar you could see it. LOL I under stand how the switch works but the P/U is noticeably lower in volume. I will do an output test as suggested and if it is a lot lower I will switch them around. Yes it has the mickey mouse pickups. It has the regular guild head stock.

Hello fab,

If your Polara is from '68 I assume that your guitar already has the small Kolb tuners?
Would love to see a photo!

Hi Hans,
Here's an older pic of my Polara, serial number SB 265, along with my '63 T-Bird, that I previously posted here. I don't have a great camera but I'll see if I can get some better shots... :D
