Hi all,

First post here. Just picked up a '66 Starfire V from a GC in MN. When I was talking to the rep on the phone, he started describing it to me and he said that there were phase switches on it. As soon as he said that, I realized that I had seen that guitar before (and you all have, too). The guitar needed some fret work, which could be why the last guy sold it. I got it refretted at SF Guitarworks. Plays like a dream now. If you have any questions about it or want me to demo anything, let me know. I'll be happy to.

One thing I noticed was the engraved number on the Guildsby: N-632-465-564-243. This seems to have been done at a factory because the engraving is super-neat. Does anyone know what this means?

You all have a great and very informative forum. I've used it for research many times! Hope I can contribute a bit.

-Dave

Welcome Dave! Sweet Starfire, very nice. Love the Wurly, too. I (stupidly) sold mine (Wurly)to a guy from Oakland a few years ago. Imagine that.
Nice to have you here. Next time you're in Tahoe or I'm in the bay area we'll grab coffee.

Dave, nice Starfire, I played it last summer and it was a great player. I think the number is someones drivers licence number. Enjoy the guitar, I was really tempted by that one.
Thanks John

Thanks all... I'm surprised you guys who played though it was a good player. When I got it I found it totally unplayable due to the worn frets and drove it straight to SF for refret.

Interesting theory about the engraving being a driver's license. It still seems to "pro" to have been done by just anyone.

Yes I've had that Wurly for eight or nine years. Sat in some old lady's basement forever, unplayed. I love it.

Michigan drivers licenses follow that format (one letter, which is the first initial of the surname; followed by four sets of three digits) and have for a long time. Maybe the original owner lived in Michigan?

We were hoping it would stay in the family, and it turns out, it did. :D Congrats, D1-5! I could definitely see where a refret could have helped the playability. Glad you had it done, and glad it now sounds (and plays) as good as it looks. :D

I love stories about new owners breathing new life to old guitars - being a good steward of your guitar is always a good feeling (and makes you happier when you play a fixed up Guild too!) congrats!

Thanks everyone. I will look into the Michigan driver's license possibility. I have been playing the guitar quite a bit and really love the neck pickup tone. I've been having a little trouble getting a desirable tone out of the bridge pickup. It always sounds a little tinny. It's not bad, but it could use a little something (I'm just not sure what). Anyone else have any solutions or suggestions? (I know tone is very subjective!)

Have you tried adjusting the height of the bridge pickup?

And welcome to LTG!

Dave :D

Just wanted to let you all know that this guitar doesn't sit in its case all day... This is from a recent gig at the Milk Bar on the Haight in SF. Sounds sweet!

That's what we like to see - Guilds under the stage lights being used by our members. Thanks for the update.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing, Dave. Were people asking where you got your cool green guitar?

This band was the DeRock Tucker Band. I was sitting in with them... not sure about future gigs. I did get lots of questions about the guitar. Lots of good comments after the show about its tone. That made me happy. Still trying to refine the tone. What amps do you guys use for your Starfires? I'm using an Egnater 30W 2x12 combo. Sounds pretty good, but it's not quite to my liking yet...

Hi!

I'm using a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65' RI with my Starfires. I think it sounds pretty well, even if I play like a noodle! ;-)
