The label says "Crafted in Tacoma" but I also hear at some point the DV series were assembled in Mexico. Anyone know when the southern Guilds started being made? Also, anyone want to weigh in on the attributes in general of the DV6?

Cheers!

As I recall the DV's moved to Mexico in late 2009. I played a Tacoma DV6 that I thought was quite nice, at the right price they can be a real bargain in a rosewood dread.

Great tone and playability but visually very plain and workmanlike. The finish is incredibly thin and prone to shining up under wear, very easy to ding too. Love mine!!!

I too have the 2008 DV6. Can't say enough good things about it. So what if it is a plain-jane acoustic. I can't wait till it gets beat up and old looking (sort of like the old vintage guitars we all want to buy). I tried two DV6's out at the music shop where I bought mine and they were both to me identical sounding. The difference in mine was I chose the one with the slight "bearclaw". There were also plenty other 1,000+ dollar acoustics there, and I tried every one of them and kept going back to the one I have.

I did go to GC (before purchasing my Guild at a mom and pop music store) and tried out all the big boy brands and immediately decided against all the Gibsons GC had, even though Gibson is what I really wanted. I did like the high end Martins and Taylors, but lets face it...$2000+ more for Gibson, Martin or Taylor. Couldn't justify it.

i bought a '96 DV6 to replace my '81 Martin D18 that came to a horrible end. while at the shop i had the chance to a/b the Guild with a like (late '70s) D18. i let my ears & hands do the picking & afaic the Guild
was miles ahead. very happy with my choice.

I believe in the future there will be great interest in the Tacoma DVs. . . meaning they will be sought after. Been impressed with the few I've seen; very impressed.

Just for the record, the Westerly DV6 referred to above, is a completely different critter, than the Tacoma DV-6 that everyone else is talking about.

Gigged mine a lot in the 2 years I've owned it, in fact it's nigh on 2 years to the day I took delivery. Anyway the satin finish on the neck is now a gloss finish from playing and the top is quite dinged and shows considerable pick wear by the rosette above the low E string, plus the area where my arm rests on the lower bout has shined up a lot and is covered in 'pearl snap' rash (I'm in an alt. country band). Swapped out the Grover tuners for Gotoh 510's plus added a K&K PWM pickup and volume control. It's a solid, reliable workhorse of a guitar and records beautifully.

I love the DV6's little brother, my DV4 (hog). It's the only Guild I bought new. Gets about 80% of playing time here.
I played a Tacoma DV6 at Elderly last year and I loved it to.
So: if offered for a good price, I'd go for it!

i wondered about that--howso?

The most noticeable difference between a Westerly DV6 and a Tacoma DV-6 is mahogany back and sides on the former, versus rosewood back and sides on the latter. I suspect there are internal differences, as well, but I don't know for sure.

In the 1990's Guild produced D4, DV4, D6 and DV6 at the fabled Westerly plant. These were all mahogany dreadnoughts and had the narrow, pointy Gruhn headstock(as far as I know). D4 and D6 were arched back. DV4 and DV6 were flat backs. There were an assortment of finishes - satin, high gloss, or hand rubbed; yadda, yadda, yadda. I believe that the primary differences between the _4 models and the _6 models was the trim level. That is purfling, rosette, herring bone strip up the back( or lack of) and other details. There were also some 12 string versions of the D4.

Starting in July of 2007 through about the end of 2008, Guild produced the DV-4 and the DV-6 in the Tacoma plant. The DV-4 was a mahogany dread and the DV-6 was rosewood. They both had Sitka spruce tops, flat backs and the wider seventies style headstock. These guitars are very plain - a satin finish with zero bling. No trim or finish options. Production of these guitars moved to Ensenada about the time the NH plant opened.

Feel free to jump in and correct me, if anyone has different or better information.
