What would be a decent price on a sunburst D50 from 1989?

I'm playing it tomorrow, so I'll see what kind of shape it's in.

If it's in good condition and doesn't need any work or a setup, $15-1600 would be a fair price. That's what I'd like to get for my '73 after it get the neck reset, and it's not totally mint condition-wise. I guess it would go down from there depending on what it needs. The fact that it's a 'burst might make it worth a little more. I don't think I've ever seen a 'burst D50.

Really? I've seen '40s go for more than that. Aren't D50s worth more as a rule?

Hola Fred,

If you're talking about the one on CL (north hollywood), then $850.00 is a pretty price for a burst D50.
Very niiice burst too, kinda like my ol D30E AB.

My 2 pennies! :D

The "Vintage Guitar Price Guide" has a range of $1,200-$1,500.

Sounds about right. Maybe a bit more on the high end if its in really great condition.

Yes, it's on Craigslist:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/msg/1665656516.html

Went to see it tonight. Has a few dings etc, but great shape for a guitar that's been around and played for many years. Action was a little high for me, but easily corrected, neck was straight and a lot of room to bring down the saddle. Frets were clean. Gorgeous looking burst, despite the 2 dings on the front, which didn't bother me at all ("mojo")

It's very tempting, I've been looking for a sunburst mahogany guitar. Wish this were a D40. I have a Tacoma D50 (natural) that I absolutely love (oh that adirondack top!), and this sounded close to what I have. I'm really torn, but I also own a Martin D16R, another rosewood dred. I really don't need 3 rosewood dreds.

Should I buy this only as an investment? I hate buying a guitar on looks, but oh that burst......

If you don't buy it, next month are you gonna be saying, "Man, I wish I'da bought that burst?"
And, will it ever be worth less that you paid for it?

I"m fairly new to LTG, having posted just a few times. My WiFi router went South on me so I haven't been able to get online until yesterday. The aforementioned, '89 D50 SB is doing well and has gone to a good home.

I caught this thread minutes before I was walking out the door to see if anyone had any information on D50s in general, which in hindsight is not the way you go about making these kinds of decisions. It was probably just a strange co-incidence, and I should have ignored the guy in the black suit, Ray Bans.......driving the cream and mocha, '59 Chrysler Imperial sitting next to me at the light on Victory at Magnolia who bore more than a slight resemblance to Rod Serling. And that odd music....

I had emailed the seller a week before requesting a few more pics as the one in the ad made the red in the 'burst appear as if was sprayed on with gloss, Krylon enamel. The photos never arrived, so I made an app't and went to see the guitar.

Well, the guitar was very, very attractive. As Fred had mentioned, there were a couple of chips in the lower bout and a little bit of "capo rash" on the neck. The tone is what sold me on the guitar. I've played a number of rosewood Martins and boutique guitars over the years, and all I can say is that this D50 holds it own with guitars from Nazareth, Kalamazoo, or Santa Cruz. The action was just right for my style of playing and the price was reasonable. It's interesting the songs that I had forgotten, that this guitar seems to remember for me.

Congratulations, David!

My D50 is in Nashville now getting a neck reset and I miss it terribly. All things considered I think it's the best all-around Guild, and maybe it's just Treem rubbing off on me, but I like the 'burst! May you have many good years and many happy times with it. :D

The saga of this Sunburst D50 gets even more interesting. I had mentioned previously that I had checked this forum minutes before I was walking out the door to see the guitar. Valleyguy was the one who started this thread inquiring about the price of the aforementioned D50 and had gone to play it, but didn't pull the trigger.

Fast forward to Thursday of last week. I had just emailed a friend who I jam with at least once a month, lives in the Valley, and by coincidence, first name happens to be Fred. In this forum folks list their guitars below their posts. So, I ask if he owns a Tacoma D50..(he usually plays a Martin or a Gad 30 )..and he replied that, yes, he did.

At that point, I let him know that I had bought the D50 SB He had looked at, and if I had known that He was "Valleyguy",
I would have called to give him first right of refusal. Guitars, no matter how nice, will never be as valuable as a friendship.

We played together last Sunday. Halfway into the jam, we exchanged guitars, I played his Tacoma D50 while he played "Our" Waverly D50.

Congrats on the D-50SB!

While I've yet to play a DV-72 (I have had the pleasure of playing a DV-73 and a D-100), I'd have to say that the D-50 is my favorite Guild 6 string model. West tells us that nothing sounds as good as his DV-72, so I still need to try one of those!
