There may be flat-head screws available for the saddle adjustment instead of the thumb screws.

I have no experience with them.
The flat screws actually do turn a Melita into a normal, playable bridge. For a short while, the reissue Gretsch Melita style bridges came with two sets of screws - one set of traditional useless thumbscrews and one set of the flat ones.

My thoughts exactly Walter. Quite likely that the Melita bridge is original. My '59 X175 has one.
