Hello Everyone,

Just thought that I would share some photos of my 1957 sunburst X500 guitar.

I was inspired to buy this guitar after getting to know an old professional jazz guitarist when I lived in Sydney, Australia. His name was Jack (?) & he used to own a shop called Guitar City which was on the 5th floor of a building in George Street back in the 1970's. He had a 1963 sunburst X500 with the Guild humbuckers & I used to go to his flat in Manly & listen to him playing & telling me the stories about his time as a guitarist just after the Second World war gigging at various ballrooms, dance venues etc. This was over 20 years ago so I assume that he may have passed away by now?

I remember as a kid buying a mid-60's maple cap Telecaster from his shop with a stripped natural body but with an Olympic White headstock - this was the only Telecaster that I've ever seen with a factory-painted headstock & this was well before the days of vintage guitars being collectible.....

Anyway, I bought this guitar from another guitarist here in London, UK, in 2012 after seeing his online advert in Guitar Mart. As far as I can tell, the guitar is all original although I did message Hans asking if he thought that the Melita bridge was original or an after-market replacement - Hans has asked me to lift up the bridge to see if the Melita bridge has a footprint of another bridge underneath it or not which I will do later on. You may notice that I've removed the 6 small knobs holding the saddles in place since I find that they stop me from being able to effectively mute the strings when playing.

The sound of the Franz pickups is warm & mellow & I will record a video at some stage so you can hear the guitar & my limited abilities as a jazz guitarist!!

So here are the pictures.......

A gorgeous light sunburst, which beautifully brings out the spruce top’s grain lines. Sweet guitar for sure.

Congrats & Enjoy!

That is a great-looking old X-500! Its rare to see the 50's more Epiphone-influenced version of those guitars. How do the Franzes sound?

Hello X-170AB,

Thanks for your kind compliment. The Franzes sound evenly balanced with no particularly dominant frequency which I like plus there isn't a noticeable difference in the volume levels changing between the pickups. Hope this is helpful!

I love everything about that guitar.....(except for the bridge:sneaky:).
That sunburst coloration is one of my favorites.
To me its combination of features put it among the best looking of all the larger Guild electric archtops.

And so happy to see that all that layered binding has come through the years in such good shape!
...and I've never heard a Franz that didn't sound just right to me.

There may be flat-head screws available for the saddle adjustment instead of the thumb screws.

Embiematic bridge

I have no experience with them.

I thought the Billy Zoom had some that he was selling also, you might ask over at the Gretsch Discussion Pages:

Beautiful guitar! I have an Embiematic Melita style bridge on my '61 X-500. Sadly Embie is out of business even though the website is still up. I like the low profile screws. I have the size written down somewhere if you're interested. They're not metric.

There was man who worked at guitar city named Peter Boothman, in fact he was one of the owners! I have a personal connection with Peter, who has since passed, but it's great to hear from people who remember this store!

Very nice and clean. Any pics of the label? Is it marked down as an X-500 or X-550?
