I have a 65? D40 with serial number 44490. I think it is a '65 but can't locate the number on the chart. It also has a bridge that doesnt look original. The guy I purchased it from swears it is original. Link to pic of bridge: Thanks

The charts do leave your serial number in limbo. The last S/N for 38636, but in 65 they went with letters and numbers. From 65-69 they were like this:

D40 1965= AJ101 to 333 1966 = AJ334 to 1136 1967= AJ1137 to 2244 1968 = AJ2245 to 2825 1969 = AJ2826 to 3218

Did you get the serial number off the label inside ? The writing can be hard to read sometimes. I think there is a number stamped inside the guitar, by the neck block too, but I could be wrong. That may have started later. I'm a guild rookie in this crowd !

Hello Tom,

Your D-40 is from the year 1965 and the bridge is a variation of the standard Guild bridge, which is referred to as a 'cloud bridge'. It is completely original on your guitar.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Well, Tom, it seems you've got a 1965 Guild D40 according to our resident expert on Guild guitars, Hans Moust, who literally wrote the book on Guilds, The Guild Guitar Book : The Company and the Instruments, 1952-1977 by Hans Moust. So you can take that information to the BANK!! It's a beautiful guitar for 55 years old and I'll bet it sounds amazing!! Congrats on your amazing classic Guild!!

Thanks Hans! One last question please. The "wings" of the bridge are very thin although the center appears of normal thickness. I am a bit concerned the bridge was shaved. Would you happen to know if the ends of a cloud bridge are thinner than a typical bridge? Thanks again!

What I see in the photo that you've posted looks original to me. The saddle may have been lowered a bit, but not a whole lot!
