Every now and then I here a cool guitar tone, but am not sure how to replicate it. I think this is a common blues setup, from a Donald Fagen tune:

I think a Wings or Paul McCartney song had a solo with a similar tone. Just can't pull it out of my memory.

What's a good guess at the signal chain on this ?

It's a Strat, nice reverb, sounds like it could be a Deluxe or Twin Reverb.

The Rhythm track has grittier overdrive than the lead track and some mild phase on it?

Why am I hearing a lot of Robert Cray in here?

Was Fagen in Steely Dan or am I getting players confused. Is he playing all tracks?

Wait, is this the real Paul?

This song has a solo?

Telecaster with some clever bendy tricks?

Who plays this, Paul? Shades of George midway through.

According to Wiki its Henry McCullough on lead.

I have it on vinyl and cd at home. I'll take a peak after work.

Saw Dan on one of the last tours Becker was alive for. My wife though it was a good show but said to me "Its just like listening to them on album". My comment to her was "yeah their that damn good that they can play it live and it sounds like you are in your living room listening to them".

Jon Herington played on several Steely Dan albums. They've always had a great guitarist on their albums, including Skunk Baxter and Larry Carlton.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker ARE and ALWAYS will be Steely Dan, along with the assortment of phenomenal session musicians.

Don't forget Walter Becker was a phenomenal guitarist in his own right too.

I like all of Fagen's solo albums. The Dan are, of course, unsurpassed. I love the comment David Crosby made about them at a Fretboard Journal summit a few years ago: "I wanna wash my hair with that music!"

In a vain attempt to de-veer the thread....

What would be the consensus on the tone ? Single coil + something for grit + ??

Would the grit be more in the overdrive or distortion range ?

I seemed rather EQ'd toward the treble. Is there compression going on as well ?

Now THAT is a proper gear page !

Based on that, his "dirt" comes from his amp and not any pedal. He currently just has some clean boosts. Not sure what he used back when the album I referenced was recorded, but he does list " including the great mods of the Blues Driver and the Tube Screamer, " pedals he sometimes uses.
