One thing about partial capos is that you can play "behind" them. In fact some chords require it. Makes it kind of difficult for those with clunky fingers such as mine, but James has large hands. He is fairly innovative with his instruments, in my favorite YouTube version of "Choctaw Bingo" he is playing a 12 string strung with just the normal 6.
