While doing some research for the Beautiful Guitar Ugly Feet thread I stumbled on a Zager ZAD 80.

Interesting web site, lots of claims...anyone familiar with them?

Hey, BC. Hmm. There used to be a lot of joking about "Zager"-izing stuff on other forums where I used to hang out. At the time, whatever innovations were underway were just hype and snake oil. But, that was then and this is now. Who knows?

Here you go.

My recollection is that they are cheap commodity instruments that have been setup well. This is in contrast to cheap commodity instruments that aren't set up well and so are effectively unplayable. Who knows - maybe reading an old thread will show my memory is shot? :)

Looks like he's building his own guitars now and competing with the higher-end brands.

From his website > We’ve had players put this guitar up against the best from Taylor, Martin, Gibson, Fender, Santa Cruz, Bourgeois, and we never get them back...< Well, I guess that means Guilds are not being replaced...

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I remember reading that the guitars are made overseas (probably China) to his specs, only a slight change to when he just "Zagerized" cheap imports.

Yeah, it really doesn't say on the website that he's hand-building all of those guitars. It also doesn't say he's importing them from China, but almost everyone is doing that now, so probably not a bad business move on his part.

At one time you could send your guitar to him and he would Zager-ize it for you. Don't know if he still does this.

The only problem is you have to wait till the year 2525 to get your guitar back.

Phil McKnight has some very interesting thoughts and insights on Zager Guitars and the company. (Spoiler: it's mostly marketing BS)

Been there not bought though went through a good bit of conversing with the Zager family . Over priced at the time seemingly now as well . The cheesy reviews especially is what put up warning flags . Zager kind of disappeared shortly after that which years ago year now I see ads on Facebook and the name popping back up on forums again.
The only true sell point they have is the easy playing which is just a good set up . Newbies might bite more on that then us more experienced.
i haven’t played one so I can’t speak for build tone or quality .
I have heard them via vids and reviews and wasn’t impressed .
The prices they quoted me at the time was in the 2,000 grand area . I know they are imported but at the time I can’t remember if they had a US build option or it was it just their a top of line models .

From the Zager webpage: https://zagerguitar.com/product-category/guitars/zad50ce/

Easy Play ZAD50 Series Solid Spruce/Mahogany Acoustic & Electric

Our original hand made guitar we’ve been building for 32 years that competes with guitars 2 times its price, the 50 Series has all the prerequisites of the traditional acoustic. Compared regularly to Martin D18 and Taylor 5 Series, but with easier playability and a lower price since you’re buying direct from the builder. For 2020 Mr. Zager added a more detailed ivory zipper stripe binding and installed the new 2020 Fishman Presys II electronics system to make this guitar truly special. Shipped direct from Denny’s hands to yours. 100% money back guarantee, lifetime warranty.

You might think that "Made in America" might figure more prominently on the webpage if it was. Especially at a $1,300 and under pricepoint.

I also find it hard to believe they make too many guitars here:

The fire pit must be where they burn the woodscraps.

Mr Zager is very loose with the truth.
Here's an example,

America's #1 rated guitar pick ... really? How many people do you know that use these?

Fits any guitar - well I bought one and I'm having some trouble ...
