If you have 10+ posts, you may now search your conversations!

Go to "View All" in Conversations and you should see a new button:

Can you make shorter “words” searchable? It’s nearly impossible to search for a specific model number (e.g. X-170, etc.) on site; the search engine parses X as a separate word and says it’s “too short”.

Assuming you mean search in general and not just conversation search, the answer to that question is "yes, but no".

Technically it's possible, but this is a default limitation of the database (MySQL) underneath XenForo. While it technically can be changed, for various performance reasons there's no way I'm changing that to "1".

Now, the deeper and perhaps better question is, what does searching for "X-170" (in quotes) not work, since the search engine should treat that as a 'phrase' and return results for it. As of right now I don't know what the answer for that question is.

There are better search engines out there for XenForo, and all of them rely on something called "elastic search". Elastic Search is a product that needs to be installed at the OS level and is a relatively serious undertaking. It's definitely on my radar, but I need to dedicate an entire day or to making sure it's done right and an entire day of focus is hard for me to come by. :)

I want to search other people's conversations.
Sorry, those are private conversations, you can't search other peoples conversations, otherwise it would make no sense to have private conversations at all!

So what is the way to search for a specific model ? Say I want to read through threads mentioning it to see what folks think

This thread is about conversations. I know that's confusing due to how conversations is named. That's not my fault - blame the developers. :) Consider conversations to be direct messages.

If you want to search for a model in forum threads (this is a forum thread, for example) then there is a search box on the top right of every page.

Note that many model numbers fall under the "minimum search length" so if you want to search for something like "D4" then you need to use Google like this: site:letstalkguild.com D4

Thanks for the reply... going to get my 1943 "Enigma" connected to LTG to decrypt all this )).
Pity, such a great community, tons of knowledge but so tricky to navigate through.

Why is it tricky to navigate?

Do you really have an Enigma?

for instance : "70's Guild F-50R" search term returns No results, while "70's Guild F50R" - works just fine, so given the official model name is "F-50" not "F50", there no way to know how to make a term searchable, iow it's not intuitive . And this is just one example.
Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll figure it out. After all - we're here to enjoy Guilds !

Sorry to be pedantic but that’s searching, not navigation. Searching is a known problem on all Xenforo based boards unless an elaborate (and pricey) search system is installed. Smart searching like that is computationally expensive and requires an extra external database. That’s why Google’s search is so good.

Additionally, not everyone adheres to “the official model name” so assuming a search for such working is probably not wise. If you want to use any sort of elaborate search then Google is your best bet.
