Starting at 9 am on Memorial Day, Philly's WXPN will broadcast the top 100 songs from their 2014 "885 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. It was a hoot when it was first broadcast with plenty of "THAT song??? No way!" to "Oh man, I've haven't heard THAT in years..." moments.

The list is here.

That UofP radio station is excellent! Transmits with a lot of power also. I listen to it on my way up I95 from Baltimore to Allentown every week

A lot of those on the first page are on my never want to hear ever again list. Not that they aren't good, I've just already heard them enough in my lifetime so I'll pass. I was happy about Into The Mystic and What's Goin' On, though!!

The “worst 88” list is just as compelling...I find it interesting the same song can be voted onto both the best and the worst list.

I remember when WBCN went off the air for the final time at midnight the big tease was “what will be the last song they spin?” Turned out to be “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”...a little obvious and shallow for such a great legacy, but then again there is no accounting for taste.

There are a lot of songs that I really liked when I first heard but overexposure dampened that enthusiasm. Stairway to Heaven is a prime example. If forced to be introspective I would admit my worst list was full of songs I didn't want to hear again rather than things that should never have been written,

Some of that might just be "Philly" - home of the folks who booed Mike Schmidt and pelted a substitute Santa Claus with snowballs.

The original Santa Claus booked for the Eagles game showed up too drunk to do anything (hey, it's Philly). They pulled some poor fan out of the stands to fill in, and happened choose a guy too skinny to fill out what was a ratty old Santa suit. Add to that stands that really weren't cleared of snow, AND a miserable end to a 2-12 season, you get Santa Claus being pelted with snowballs.

Wow, glad I lived in the NY metro instead of the Philly metro. ;)

Yeah, Philly fans are tough, but they are fair. You hustle for them, and they'll appreciate you with much love. That was Michael Jack Schmidt's problem - when he was at his peak he was SO good that his play looked effortless . Once the fans figured that out, and further realized they were watching possibly the GOAT at his position, they loved him unconditionally.

My Best In-Person Philly Fan Moment was Game 3 of the '08 World Series: Every time the Rays' Evan Longoria came to bat, 45,900 fans starting chanting, "EVA, EVA!!" at the top of their lungs in unison. He went 0 for 4. Heh-heh.
